@jym626
No, i have not done CSS yet. Since the deadline is 31st of jan, i was thinking of doing it after EA GT results are out.
Did you submit the Profile to Michigan?
No. I need to do that as well. Thought of doing all that at the same time, with GT one that is.
How much can your parents pay per year without borrowing? Since you can only borrow ~$5500/year on your own that’s an important number.
If your parents will pay for you to go OOS and you’re just debating if the extra cost is worth it that’s a different situation than your parents not being willing to pay. If your parents won’t pay OOS rates then the ROI of a $65k/year OOS college doesn’t matter.
You are not going to get a need based aid award…at all…until you complete the Profile form for Michigan. At this point, without the Profile, your financial aid application form is incomplete.
What are you waiting for? Clearly, you need financial aid. The schools can’t even decide whether you are eligible for need based aid until you get this Profile form done.
I know the deadlines are later, but what’s the problem with getting this off your to do list.
Agree with @thumper1. GT’s merit awards (President and Provost) don’t require the Profile but all the additional scholarships do, and are need based. Have never heard that accepting GT EA offer early has ANY bearing on the likelihood of getting a NEED based scholarship (especially over and above your ZM full tuition award). Tat said, the additional reports are only $16 each. Just.Do.It. Send the info to GT and Michigan.
My nephew missed the GT deadline when he graduated early. He went to Georgia state and is transferring to GT next year. GT is one of the best schools in the world and is on par with Michigan for engineering, CS, etc. It is better than any Ivy in those subjects.
Zell Miller will pay nearly all of the tuition expenses at GT, or any other Georgia public college as long as you maintain your GPA. You have to cover living expenses, but those don’t vary all that much.
If you are not accepted to GT, I would go to UGA and transfer.
This sounds like a really good deal. Can your family cover room and board?
Thanks everyone, once again for valuable inputs and time. Really appreciate it.
@austinmshauri , yes, that should be fine.
TIA
Knowsstuff, I was wondering if your kids received the University of Michigan grant and if so did they get the same amount each year? We are also from Illinois, my son just saw his financial aid for freshman year at Michigan and he received a nice University of Michigan grant. My concern is for the future years because this first fafsa we have two kids in college but we won’t on the next fafsa and our income will also be somewhat higher. Michigan is only doable if he keeps that grant every year.
Yes. We have two in college till this year. They actually increased the grant as tuition increased. Usually it will remain the same for all 4 years but honestly my wife handles this. My daughter took a gap year and they didn’t decrease anything.
@andisoul I would call Michigan’s financial aid office and ask them. Generally the change in number of kids has an impact on aid based on the FASFA. There are plenty of great write ups out there. I like this one

Per the Michigan website, the grant is considered need base. So any change in need calcs would probably impact it.
Michigan doesn’t guarantee to meet full need for all out of state students. Is it possible that the grant you had fell under the bar for meeting need for the one kid…even when the other wasn’t enrolled?
I guess. My wife does the finances. It was a nice amount but definitely not full need. But we are appreciative of what we did receive. He also got a great amount for study abroad and we were shocked actually
I do think there is a lot of funding for study abroad. It is something Michigan has been focusing on. It is also one of these things that are hard to compare across schools. Some give lots of funding up front, but it is hard to find other funding. Others have lots of targeted funding kids can access for specific experiences. It is hard to really figure out what overall costs will be when comparing schools. Relative to most state schools, it seem like Michigan has more of the extra funding.
To be clear I currently have 2 in college. After this year just one. She’s not going to go to graduate school this fall but next, most likely.
So, @Aspiring007 - did you get into GT?
Crickets…
@jym626 , YES.
As everyone has mentioned, GT beats everyone from financials standpoint.
Awaiting Princeton/Yale.
Within state things got a little more challenging (decision pov), since i am a finalist for Presidential scholarship @ GSU.
From everything i have gathered, friends/family/here, GT is the best option and i most likely will go with it.
Thanks everyone, again.
GT is an amazing place. You really don’t have bad options here… Lol.
