U.S. going to normalize relations with Cuba

And now travel will basically be unrestricted.

Let’s start by saying that in any normal country these people wouldn’t have been in jail to begin with, therefore they are hostages to be released as a gesture of “good will” at the government’s whim when needed. Yes they have been set CONDITIONALLY “free” from an actual prison into the minimum security prison that the rest of Cuba is but their charges still remain and they could be put back in prison at the snap of a finger.

What is a “normal” country with respect to civil and political freedoms?

https://www.freedomhouse.org/sites/default/files/Population%20Trends%2C%20FIW%201980-2014.pdf indicates that about 39.7% of the world’s population in mid-2013 lives in “free” countries (as opposed to 25.6% in “partly free” countries and 34.7% in “not free” countries).

Yes, Cubans should be glad that they are in the company of 34.7% of the world. To me a “normal” country is one where it’s not state policy to make the lives of your citizens miserable, where any individual action that anybody takes that the government deems , on a whim, “counterrevolutionary” can lead to arbitrary detention for an indefinite period. The system makes Cuba into a minimum prison where everybody is on home leave and where it’s even illegal to move from one town to another (and I mean move, not just go). .

Rolling Stones gave free performance to 700,000 Cubans today.
That’s cool!

Those guys are mummified, but good lord they can ROCK!!! B-)

Yea… I think I like them more now that they’re mummified. It shows that they’re true, passionate musicians. They’re not doing it for the fame, for the money or for the women. (Well, maybe the latter.) They’re doing this because this is their life. And this weekend, they did it because it was a meaningful gesture for Cuba. Class.
