Today is the 5th of July. plus 7 days becomes 12th. I am pretty sure they will email rejections next week. That is what I meant when I said that.
I heard some ppl have already got offer
Where did you hear this from? @givmethemail
Through reddit or something?
A handful of freshmen got accepted off the college of engineering on their forum.
Was it today?
Yes @givmethemail , where did your hear this? Can anyone else corroborate this?
And that was Friday
Lol
I think the Freshman wait-list is moving faster than the transfer wait-list. Iām guessing that a higher rate of Freshman are dropping out compared to the Transfers. There is a much higher percentage of international students for Freshman than Transfers. Freshman could also withdraw to go to CCC while Transfers canāt.
Iāve been looking through reddit forums and through the live chat and so far I havenāt heard about a transfer getting accepted after June 30th. I think the transfer wait-list is going to start to move this upcoming week. Probably closer to the end of the week.
Yes, I guess it should come by Thursday or Friday
Just wanted to add that supposedly some people on the UCB Freshman thread mightāve been lying about there admissions.
Sorry for the late response, I have been off-line for the past few days.
Appeal rejection letters that I know of usually say they reviewed/re-reviewed the appeal or application. It was not mentioned anywhere in the letter. Additionally, they said they rejected due to lack of space specfically.
I also emailed admissions officers afterwards and they said they donāt have space and I should reapply next year
Iām glad they responded though lol
Hi! Were the Thursday acceptances considered a wave?.
Yes.
The above is from the live chat and that maske sense for my info. We just missed the 1st wave~
Do you know what college the acceptances were for for the āfirst waveā since from what I see freshman wave was engineering (nuclear e more specifically). Is it same for transfer?
Do we even know that transfers got a wave? So far I have only heard of Freshman being accepted, not transfers. Did the AOs clarfiy that they were talking about both groups or were they only talking about Freshmen? @givmethemail
We canāt make any assumptions from that if they were only talking about the Freshmen since Freshmen and Transfers have had their waves released on different dates so far AFAIK.
Also, ICE just released a statement saying international students with online classes canāt stay in the country and that they have to move back home if they wonāt be taking in person classes. This is extremely messed up and might cause a drop in international students. If this becomes an issue for Berkeley I could see them having to postpone decisions yet again to see if any spots open up due to international students dropping.
I saw the ICEās statement as well this morning. It is definitely huge issue for IS. Iām not sure if this could be a reason for other transfer IS student drop their offer because IS tuition is a big income for Universities so the institutions might adjust their online classes to hybrid. Maybe some freshman applicants are outside the country and the travel ban might be a reason for them to choose somewhere else, but most transfer international student just finished their cc and waiting for attending a 4-year. I donāt mean to say something like how would this affect the possibility on getting off the waitlist because we never know until the last minute.
Personally, Iām getting very stressed at the moment I saw the announcement, but I would suggest someone like me(international student and donāt wanna go back due to concerns about OPT, CPT, renewing VISA) think about plan-B and get prepared. We can keep checking student emails for updates and enroll hybrid classes just in case they are full/closed after mid-July.
We already did our best on applying and preparing before transfer. However, the covid-19; waitlist delays ect are not things that we can control. I wish everyone take good care of ourselves emotionally and physically.
āHoping for the best, prepared for the worst, and unsurprised by anything in between.ā
Things just get harder : (
Isnāt Berkeley going to be Hybrid? Now students realize that since it is basically 97% online at this point, calling it a hybrid will be disingenuous, but even if it is unofficially online, officially Berkeley is still calling it a hybrid.
Now I am not too sure about the exact details of ICEās ruling, like you have to leave as an IS student if the SCHOOL will be fully online or is it dependent on your specific schedule of classes.
Either way from reddit posts I see some messages about protecting IS students from this ruling especially due to how damaging it could be for leasing.
The school has to file official form to the gov to prove what kind of classes they will offer.
According to the ice website "Certified schools that will not be entirely online but will reopen in the fall and that will
use any of the following educational formats must update their operational plans by
August 1, 2020 and include whether they will be:
⢠Solely in-person classes, or
⢠Delayed or shortened sessions, or
⢠A hybrid plan of in-person and remote classes.
These plans shall also be submitted to SEVP@ice.dhs.gov and the subject line must read: āFall
2020 (in person/hybrid/modified session) ā School Name and School Code.ā So it depends on Berkeley that how they design their classes and report it.
As IS, it doesnāt depend on our decision. We have to leave if the classes we are taking are all online. But it really depends on the schools course designs. Maybe chemistry or other class with lab can open more in-person class. But for other subjects that can be taught remotely, I donāt know if the profs are willing to give lectures. What I can wish is there are some my major classes open for in-person⦠āSchools must update and reissue all Forms I-20 to reflect these changes in program enrollment
and student information within 21 business days of publication of this Broadcast Message, on
Aug. 4, 2020.ā If the classes we are taking are all online, they we must leave. According to this line " Active
students currently in the United States enrolled in such programs must depart the country or
take other measures, such as transferring to a school with in-person instruction to remain in
lawful status or potentially face immigration consequences including, but not limited to, the
initiation of removal proceedings." (*such programs refers to full-time online courses)
Am I able to post link here? My info are from the ICE gov website.
resource cr: https://www.ice.gov/doclib/sevis/pdf/bcm2007-01.pdf
This is the part that applies to Berkeley specifically since Berkeley is going with a hybrid model.
"Students attending schools implementing a hybrid model can take more online classes or credits, though their school must certify āthat the program is not entirely online, that the student is not taking an entirely online course load this semester, and that the student is taking the minimum number of online classes required to make normal progress in their degree program.ā
So basically international students need to take at least one in person class in order to be allowed entry into the US and for their student VISAs not to be revoked. The problem is that it is extremely difficult to get an in-person class right now. I SIRāed to UCSB and it seems as if all the in-person classes are completely filled, including the waitlists. In person classes are extremely limited across schools.
Iām not trying to speculate too much but this seems as if it could be a huge deals for Berkeley. They have a sizable international population and international students make up a good portion of their tuition income.
I wouldnāt be surprised if the fallout of this causes them to push back on wait-list decisions further into July.
