I’m bringing a letter of rec because the e-mail said I could. The Regents people gave me the idea and I feel like I should take advantage of it.

^^ my friend (who got this scholarship last year) said it was more about who you are. in fact, he said they were going to try to convince us to come to berkeley because we’re already accepted!

so how difficult is it to get this scholarship after the interview? I mean, I had my interview, and I am a pretty competitive student (4.0, 2340 SAT, good extracurriculars, many AP’s), and my interview was about 20 min and mostly I talked about why I was interested in bioengineering and and med school, and how Berkeley was one of my top choices. I gave him a resume and a letter of rec, and I asked him a few questions about Berkeley engineering and research opportunities. What do you think? Is it difficult to get the scholarship? How many are interviewed, and how many actually get it?

School won’t release recommendation to student and UCB will not accept recommendation sent directly to school. Does anyone have thoughts on how to handle this?

@college4kids

After having my interview, I would heed blue ducky’s advice in post 39.

^^ inflatedcoin, just wondering why you say so (after my interview…). did you bring recs for the interview? did your interviewer ask for one?

i was told that 1100 were selected as candidates out of 52000+ applicants and 400 will be awarded. they expect around 200 awardees will accept. problem is, some of these candidates are already committed to other reach schools, but still are doing the interviews anyway for their feel-good stuff, taking away opportunities to others who could have gotten it instead.

^got2havK: when I turned in my letter last year the professor did not know anything about accepting letters/prospective scholars bringing in letters. She later found out that she could and so she took mine.

Taking into consideration what blueducky said, it’s probably not that big a deal if you do not give a letter. I still however do not think it hurts or detracts from your confidence. I remember my email saying to bring one if you wanted, so I simply followed that.

Best of luck to everyone yet to have their interview!

got2

I say that because the whole/majority of the time during the interview, the professor is pitching the school to you. I did bring a resume/teacher recommendation, but I found that there was not an appropriate place to stop the conversation and bring up those papers. I just let the interview run its course freely and smoothly. Remember, they want you. Like what ducky said, bringing those papers may show insecurity, and I think it will distract you from what’s important. Of course this was just my professor/interview.

^^thanks cassenoix & inflated.

InflatedCoin, I’m sorry to hear that. I do think that it just depends on who your interviewer is, though. My interview was very enjoyable - the professor was extremely friendly and we had a great (2-way!) conversation! Just thought I should say.

Did anyone attend ROHP?

Napster, I also thought my professor was friendly, and the interview was enjoyable/2 way street. But the topic of conversation seemed to be mostly about him and his experiences rather than mine.

Good luck got2!

ok so im going to ask this for the last time (just to make sure because it seems to good to be true): if we are interviewing for regents, are we automatically accepted? even this year (despite all the funding issues and international quotas)? can i tell my parents i just got in to cal?

my interview’s on thurs btw.

Yes, you are informed of your acceptance when you check in for the interview.

omg can’t wait until tomorrow! :)

referee. i did attend the rohp, then interview next morning. then i attended 2 classes, physics & calc. i want to soak into the experience, deciding if berkeley’s right for me.

^ sounds like a plan. i love cal and am forsure going there!!! hope to see you there too :)

Hey everyone!

I have my Regent’s Interview this Saturday and was hoping to get some insight. If anyone who already had his/her interview this year could please detail the whole interview experience that would be great! What is there to expect? What should I be prepared to answer? Am I really notified then that I have been accepted to Berkeley?

Thank you to everyone! Any and all information would be appreciated!

Dear President,

I had my interview today. When you check-in, the lady tells you that you have been accepted. You can meet other people who are also interviewing and other prospective scholars in the check-in area. Then, you are given a map and you actually have to walk to the building where the professor’s room/work place is. I highly recommend you wear walking shoes. Next, you meet your professor. My professor was pretty cool. He asked me questions about the school I come from, why I applied to Berkeley, what adversities I have overcome, what I wish I had done better in high school, what I planned to do at Cal, etc. After that he shared his experiences at Cal and gave me plenty of advice on how to be a good undergraduate student and make the most of my academic experience. Interview lasted exactly 32 minutes. Finally, I left and ate food on campus. When you check-in, you’ll receive information on things you can do after your interview (so you don’t have to act like a pig like I did). There are classes you can attend, go on campus tours, etc.

Today was a great day. I’ll have no regrets if I unfortunately don’t receive this scholarship!

hope this helps somewhat…
