Yes! i just got one. I read online it doesn’t put you at a disadvantage but still wondering haha… hm I’m not sure what it means. on Berkeley’s website it’s not clear to me their explanation
I did not receive any emails asking for LOR but yesterday when I checked Map@Barkeley, I was invited for LOR. I assigned my recommenders but just now I received an email that I was not selected to submit LOR.

We are writing to let you know that today is the last day that we are notifying students who have been selected to submit letters of recommendation as part of their UC Berkeley application.
While you were not selected for this option, please rest assured that we have all the information we need to thoroughly and thoughtfully review your application. To learn more about this process, please visit our website.
So, they’re done. I’m in the mid range of applicants, hope this isn’t good or bad.
So I received the “last day for Letters of Rec” e-mail today…

Hey everyone, I was given the email that told me that I wasn’t invited to send letters of rec, but I logged into the UC Berkeley portal and got this:
"After an initial review of your application, we invite you to submit letters of recommendation to add to your admission application. This involves asking one or two people who know you well (including one teacher) to submit a letter or recommendation on your behalf.
Here are a few points to consider:
This is optional and not required. If you decide not to submit letters of recommendation as part of your application, we will continue to evaluate your file with the information you provided in your UC Application.
You have the option of submitting up to two letters of recommendation. One letter must be from an academic teacher.
To give your recommender(s) enough time to respond, please initiate the request within the next five days. Visit our website for tips on how to ask teachers and counselors to support you with a letter of recommendation.
DEADLINE: The deadline for your recommenders to electronically submit their letters of recommendation to UC Berkeley is January 15, 2016."
I’m guessing those emails were sent out in error. Check through https://apply.berkeley.edu/account/login if you haven’t already.
Thank you so much @yinuos mine says the same thing so now they want a LOR even though I got the email.
@yinuos
Do you think we’ll be penalized if we send letters from rec in even though we technically didn’t get invited?
@yinuos
Aw crap… I don’t want to have to bother my teachers now that it’s break. I’m just going to wait a week to see if it’s an error and then email the admissions office to ask.
EDIT: Logged back in a few minutes later… the LOR screen didn’t show up this time. Weird.
@DrDorias I know as much as you do, but I seriously doubt we’ll be penalized. Worst case scenario is they just don’t look at it.
@tmcl24 It’s still there for me. I also emailed admissions, I’ll post again if I get a response.
Not invited to submit LOR
- California student, female, white
- Applied to Engineering
- 4.79 GPA
- SAT 2270
- 700 on Math II subject test (weakest point)
- But, 5 on AP Calc
- Very strong extracurriculars (founded 2 successful CS-related businesses, etc)
- Expected Associate's degree while in HS
I can’t seem to see a pattern in those who were and weren’t asked for letters…if anyone learns something, please let me know!
Ok the same thing is happening with me!
I got the email yesterday from Cal that it was the last day for LOR’s and I was not a chosen applicant. Then I came on a thread and someone posted a link to the Cal portal for applicants, and that link shows LOR requests rather than the normal Cal portal link.
I think it’s a glitch, but I am going to call Cal monday and confirm.
Regular portal: https://apply.berkeley.edu/account/login?r=https://apply.berkeley.edu/apply/status
Portal that show’s LOR requests: https://apply.berkeley.edu/account/login
Got the LOR request, and my stats are nowhere near good enough to go to Berkeley. It MAY have been my essays, but who knows. Also I applied as a freshman Sociology major.
@scoobysnacks56 I’m not saying you don’t have good essays but I doubt they would have had enough time to read any essays. What were your stats?
Same things happening to me here… I received a letter saying I was not a chosen applicant for the LOR option, but when go to the same address on the thread, and click on the button that says open application, the LOR page shows up…
.
A lot of people say its random, but I’m still kinda worried. I know a couple very qualified people and a couple slightly under qualified people who got request for letters.
I did not get a request for letters.
2370 SAT, 4.76 weighted, 3.96 unweighted. took (mostly) the hardest classes my school offers. 800 780 760 math2 chem bio subject tests, good ECs (natl level in an academic competition, pres of a few clubs, mol bio research, etc.).
Out of state, applied for bioengineering.
