You shouldn’t worry about the topic being cliche. You should focus more on how you present yourself. Some people pick the most mundane topics but end up producing award-winning essays.

In regards to your topic, I think you focus on the idea of self-reflection, meaning that after your journey filled with ups and downs, what did you take away from it? Did you discover something new about yourself? Also, it would be great to include specific examples/memorable experiences in your essay. You don’t want to generalize. The goal is to show an aspect of yourself that cannot be found in transcripts/test scores to and set you apart from other applicants.
