no extra circulars, and my educational path isn’t like most. in my early 30s- dropped out of high school long time ago- had horrid grades. my personal insight questions were very very good though. My life circumstances made for a good story to tell.
Irvine was my first choice. Really wasn’t expecting getting into UCSD.
Accepted! This feels so good after being rejected everywhere else (took a bio sequence only ucsd articulates and realized too late.)
Accepted into Marshall college (first choice)
Stats for future applicants:
Major human bio (I didn’t indicate an alternate which got me stressed)
3.9 something gpa (one b)
Major prep almost done (only missing O chem series)
Igetc completed
My ec weren’t anything crazy imo since I was on a time crunch to get out
Things to note : I graduated at 16 (now im 17) attended cc for 3 regular semesters so I had really heavy load semesters considering my major(last semester I took 22 units and they were all major classes excluding my second English class) and took lots of classes during summer and winter.
This is really a dream come true! I will be attending and hope to see u guys in the fall! Congratulations to everyone who got in!
major: psych w/ emphasis in cognitive psych
uc gpa: 3.28 (3.40 now)
igetc: done by end of spring
pre majors: i have no idea lol did not check because i was set on sb instead
accepted: ucr, ucsc, uci, ucsb, ucsd (got into every one i applied to!!)
Accepted!
GPA: 4.0
Major: Ecology, Behavior, and Evolution
College: Muir
Accepted: UC Davis, UCSC (Regents scholarship), UCLA, UCSB, and Berkeley
I can’t believe I got in everywhere I applied! Does anyone know if UCSD notifies their their Regents scholarship recipients at the time of admission? I was really hoping for Regents there
Accepted!
Major: Global Health
GPA: 4.0
College: Muir
Accepted: UCI, UCLA, UCSD
Rejected: UCB, Pomona College, Williams, Amherst
Pending: lots of private schools
Essays: Decent, I’m honestly not super proud of them, but they were well-written.
Extracurricular: Not super heavy on them, but I have one extracurricular that I am pretty good at and spend a lot of time in.
@user_369186 Nope. There’s no way to transfer from math-cs major to cs because they are in different department. Since math-cs in math department, you can only change to a major within your department. I asked this to admission officers at UCSD
I believe data science and computer science is in the same engineering school, but cs is part of cse department and data science isn’t part of a department from what I know. I’m not sure if there would be a way for you to switch your major to cs since cs is very impacted and they usually don’t allow transfer students to switch their major unless it’s within their department
Major:Political Science American Politics
CC Transfer
GPA: 3.5
College: Eleanor Roosevelt
Applied to: CSULB, San Jose, UCSC, UCB,UCSB,UCSD
Accepted: CSULB,San Jose, UCSC, UCSB, UCSD
Rejected:UCB
Essay: I’m always very hard on myself when it comes to writing but got very good feedback on them!
Extra curricular: talked about my HS activities and leadership positions. Now a full time employee to save up for college
I would absolutely not come here if you wanted to switch into CS. The internal major change process for it is very difficult. One word that sums it up? Lottery.
Undeclared/other majors who wanted to switch in would have to get a certain GPA in a select group of courses. You have to take a chunk of these at UCSD. But the main problem isn’t the GPA (can be a hassle), and it also isn’t getting the classes themselves (which can also be a pain).
It’s the lottery system that you really have to worry about. Each student has only 2 chances to enter that lottery. Once those are used, the major change is no longer possible. But it still seems almost impossible with 2 attempts left, given how overly popular this major is. UCSD is particularly notorious because of the exclusively brutal lottery system. Not even Berkeley has a lottery.
Also, as a Data Science major, you do not have any priority in registering for CSE classes (except for 2-3 out of a couple dozen). For the important classes like data structures/algorithms, you’ll most likely have a tough time getting in because of all the CSE majors (who have priority). So you could be getting bad professors (yes, there are plenty of them at UCSD), and/or a later graduation time. Not to mention how nothing articulates to data science courses, so you’re sorta starting over (in terms of major courses).
Keep in mind that UCSC does not require any physics (while UCSD CS does). Combine that with the whole “starting over” thing for Data science, and you could graduate much quicker at UCSC. Being near Silicon Valley is also a plus.
Want to post a few stats for future reference for anyone who may be in a similar boat as I have been in CC–
Accepted - Political science- international studies to roosevelt
-3.38 GPA post-TAU
-My transcript is UGLY. I’ve been in community college on and off for 5 years, have about 15 dropped classes, multiple F’s that have either been academically renewed or retaken for a passing grade.
-Medium to good EC’s: have worked a lot with a non-profit, gone on multiple 1 month- 3 month volunteer trips to east africa, am learning swahili (language commonly spoken in that part of the world) to better understand the area. have volunteered on local political campaign, worked as a social media person for a non-profit. have also worked full time while in school.
-Essays were decent. I’ve always considered myself a good writer-- but they were also a bit risky. No one reviewed them cuz I’m… the worst. Subjects ranged from how a mentally ill mother effected my life, to my disagreement with the idea of ‘standing out’. Still unclear if essays mean anything with mid-tier UC’s but ¯_(ツ)_/¯
Understandably, I was denied from the top tier schools. But, with a messy AF transcript, I still got into 3 UC’s. I spent years believing it absolutely impossible for me to ever transfer considering my mess ups. I was wrong, and honestly, if you think you can’t get into school, you’re probably wrong, too.
I am so thankful that this process is over. I never EVER want to wait on school admissions again. Congrats to everyone, and good luck to those still waiting for admissions during this cycle.
I got accepted Aerospace Engineering , 6th college.
GPA 3.56
out of state private college
I was wondering if anyone else applied first choice mechanical engineering and got accepted as aerospace engineering (2nd choice).
I thought aerospace was a harder and more competitive major to get in to?
Trying to decide if I should try to switch into mechanical or just stick it out in aerospace, since they’re pretty similar anyways.
** Eligible students who have not exceeded the two-time application limit and meet the 3.3 GPA cutoff for screening courses, UCSD 8 unit residency requirement in CSE courses, and approved quarter by quarter plan (QXQ plan needed for students with 150+ units) will be populated onto an Excel sheet. Each student is then randomly assigned a number using Excel’s random number generator. Students are then sorted by their assigned number from highest to lowest number. The students with the 80 highest assigned numbers are offered a seat in the CSE department (80 seats offered with an anticipated yield of 75 students). **
UCSD website; ** Transfer students must be admitted to a biology major at time of admission to UC San Diego in order to pursue a major within the Division of Biological Sciences. Transfer students admitted to UC San Diego in a non-Biology major are not eligible to declare a biology major as a primary or secondary (double) major after matriculation to UC San Diego.
@michtrei1
Your personal history is inspiring. Thanks for sharing. You are living proof that perseverance and hard work matter. I’m sure during each period of difficulty, a part of you may have wanted to give up…but you didn’t and that spirit has paid off big! Congrat’'s on your admissions. Expecting great things from you in the future.
BTW-I personally don’t view the schools as “top tier” the way you do. Each of the UC’s has it’s own unique offering. Many students that I have seen have been accepted to UCB and rejected at UCSD for example. Likewise, there are many students accepted to UCLA/UCB that will ultimately choose to attend a different school because the offering is better for their major, or a better fit for them.
