UC San Diego Freshman Class of 2028 Waitlist/Appeals Discussion

This is the first year that I have seen that option but for the previous 2 years, they started denying some students on the waitlist and kept others on the waitlist for possible summer melt spots.

Is this an indication of a potential rejection ? I am aware that ā€œLetter of continued interestā€ does not work with UCSD. How else to express our continued interest and desire to UCSD? We certainly will not opt-out. If you can suggest a way to express our dream to get accepted by UCSD, please share.

By not opting out, you are expressing interest. UCSD just wants to know which students are still interested and not spend time on the waitlisted students that have moved on and will not accept a spot if admitted.

My child is yearning to get CS major in UCSD (undergrad), but that just continues to be a dream yet to come true. Being an impacted major, chances are trickling by the day, and then we get this email prompting to opt-out. This email is not helping the situation, but just letting down. Still hanging in there.

I actually think that email from UCSD is helpful. It eliminates the students who have already made up their minds that they will be going elsewhere even if offered by UCSD. It actually improves your student’s chances if you opt in and hopefully expedites the decision-making on UCSD’s end. I wish UCB did the same thing.

i feel like UC San Diego did this because they put too many people on the waitlist for the 2024 cycle.

do you think that this will cause people to opt out of the waitlist or do you think people will ignore it even if they are happily committed to another school? does this mean that they’re planning to close the waitlist soon? i hate how all of this is unknown

Just speaking for my son–when he got it he opted out since he’s 100% happy with where he’s going. I hope more kids do this to leave potential space for kids who are still really hoping for UCSD.

That’s helpful to know!

Nice! Where did he decide on? And curious to know his major.

Seems like a good sign for anyone waiting that they plan to keep admitting more people off the list in July and are trying to get through the list as quickly as possible.

My daughter submitted her SIR off the waitlist last week for Public Health. She hasn’t received anything yet about housing and getting nervous about it. Will she be guaranteed housing as an incoming freshman admitted off the waitlist? Thanks for your input!

Personally, for me, it is just building up anxiety. My child has committed to another university, is flying to the committed university to attend orientation by the first week of July, is committing to a room mate - like go with the flow with the bird in hand, and keep longing for the bird in bush. Agreed, that the highly reputed/ ranked universities are on high demand, and this is the cost one has to pay (not just the monetary part, the emotional roller coaster as well). Looks like, ā€œit is all in the game.ā€

I would think that after June 28, they will, as that was the date on the email.

So do you think they’ll start closing the waitlist soon? i wonder if its going to be random waves throughout the day with all majors that they have space for.
