Thanks so much for the offer. I will let my son know if he wants to contact your Junior Cal student.
Best two dorms on campus are probably Anacapa and Santa Cruz, in my opinion. At least for freshman year.
When my daughter was a freshman in 2021-2022 Anacapa was known as the biggest party dorm.
I thought that designation went to Santa Catalina (aka FT).
Well according to my daughter, Anacapa is where you were you mostly likely to encounter vomit on the floor
If an incoming student is an Engineering major and a Regents scholar, who gets priority choice of housing, do you have any insight on pros/cons to choosing Honors floor within a dorm? And since you already said 2 best dorms, in your opinion, are Anacapa and Santa Cruz, any recommendations on best dorm and/or floor to choose based on getting priority housing choice? Ideally my son would prefer a double, but not sure that’s an option or worth it compared to getting preferred dorm. Thanks!
Always FT to me too!
Signed,
UCSB alum
Agree, FT had a reputation as the biggest party dorm and more (with a nickname we can’t mention here). It was bought by UCSB and later renamed, but perhaps the rules were looser when it was a private dorm.
I am trying to understand the value and benefit of the Living Learning Communites (LLC) and FYRE (First Year Residential Experience) and Scolars Communities. Can anyone share any expriences or general thoughts about these these 2 communities and aout the LLC’s overall. Son just sent his SIR and will be a Pre-FMS major.
I have a question regarding Freshman Summer Start Program. It seems that the students in this program will stay in San Nicolas Hall for their first school year But if we apply for a different residence hall for the first school year, will the students be allowed to move to a different hall when the summer program ends? THANK YOU!
In the past, students were given the option to move out.
You ought to call the program to check. I think I read somewhere that, as you said, participants in the program are assigned to San Nicolas Hall for their first school year so they can be with the community they met in their summer program. So if someone wants to go to a different dorm you should ask if that is possible.
Oh, if that is the case, then it has changed. Either way, I don’t believe they stay in the same room.

Thank you for the article!
In a reddit thread from last year, someone asked the following.
“Hey guys, I’m an incoming freshman and I’m registered for FSSP. I’m doing the housing form for it and they’re asking if I want to stay in San Nic or move to a different hall after FSSP. Idk what to do cuz I haven’t lived there yet and I have to commit soon, so do you guys have any advice?”
Thank you!
That’s great that they give flexibility now. I always thought the lo-rise dorms were better.
I got a reply from the FSSP today. If the FSSP students would like to move out the FSSP dorms, they cannot store their stuff in the dorms between 9/14-9/21.
Does anyone know when (and how) incoming Freshman can apply for the honors program?
