Yay!!! So happy to hear.

nice! your son will love it here

Just wanted to give an update that we chose not to take the risk and accept UCSB’s offer to go as Undeclared in Letters and Sciences and try to switch to CS. We initially committed to UCSC.
But I’m happy to report that my son got off the UCLA waitlist for Computer Science last week! He has committed there, which is actually his first choice school.

committed recently–how is san rafael as a freshman dorm? i know its not the best socially but otherwise how would you rate it

It is a little farther from the center of campus than the other on-campus dorms, but it is much closer than Santa Catalina. It is convenient to both Isla Vista and campus. While students can eat in any dining common, Carillo is next to San Rafael and tends to have better ratings than DLG or Ortega.

I haven’t been inside the dorms in years. Maybe @gauchoengineering can give more recent first had experience about the rooms.

Yeah, I have heard Carillo is the best dining commons.

This is kind of random but I am an incoming freshman looking for roommates and I have been failing… I have Bunky and ZeeMee (+ the Instagram pages) but have not found any luck so far. Does anyone have any other recommendations? :')

I lived there my second year! Good living conditions, pretty spacious double suites. A lot quieter than the other choices but also super close to IV / restaurants the beach.

Mostly second years / third years.

You would think so… until you try Portola. It’s also the newest one with the nicest dining environment.

Some images I took of San Raf:

In Winter 2023 it actually snowed in the Santa Ynez Mountains above campus! Snow on the beach

I lived in San Raf my sophomore year. That was many moons ago. Are there still small study cubicles on each floor? I remember them being the size of a closet - basically a small desk and chair. I spent many hours studying ochem in those study closets.
