UC Santa Cruz Class of 2028 Official Thread

For reference, my D24 was admitted early to UCSC but denied at UCI and has not heard early from UCSB. I think it’s random and wouldn’t worry if you haven’t heard

Probably hard to tell since there’s such a degree of randomness to UC admissions. My son was accepted early, then accepted to Davis and Irvine. Hard to tell if we’re just getting lucky or my son managed to hit some high points in his PIQs, because he did not have the flawless GPA that many who were waitlisted/rejected seem to have.

Same for my daughter, early accepted to UCSC then both Davis BioChem and Irvine Nursing Science. I think her IQPs were really good and some unique ECs or she just got lucky🤷‍♂️

did he explain circumstances for why he didn’t have as good of a gpa?

No. The only extra comment he made was about why he hadn’t taken one max rigor class (it wasn’t offered).

Is UCSC admissions more selective than UCR in Business/Economics?

In general, yes UCSC can be more selective but it really depends upon what each UC campus admissions officer is looking for in admitting applicants and how they define “fit”.

FYI, Last year (S23) received the email (March 8th) “Reminder: Check Your Access to the UC Santa Cruz Portal” with the same messaging that decisions would be released “By March 20th” with the times of release. On March 13th he received an update to his portal email and his decision was posted.

My daughter really like UC Santa Cruz. Is one of her top choices. However, as a parent, reading about the housing issues makes me very very uncomfortable. To the point I have told her it is off the table. You can’t study and enjoy college while worrying about where you are going to live each year. Am I overreacting?

No! I agree!

I agree that Santa Cruz’s housing problem is more severe than most, but it is a problem at most of the UCs. I am less familiar with the Cal States, but I know finding housing when you cannot live at home can be difficult. Most colleges will have kids living off campus after their freshman year. Students search for housing every year, unless they find an apartment and roommate situation that works for multiple years. My oldest is at Berkeley. You can find housing, but it is time consuming. I understand taking Santa Cruz off the table, just know that you will face this issue, to some degree, at most universities.

Is it though? I feel like Merced, Irvine, Los Angeles, San Diego, these all have housing markets. Yes, I feel you have to look, but housing is THERE. I feel like there is not actual housing in Santa Cruz. There is not enough surrounding cities to ease the issue?

I agree Santa Cruz is worse, and more expensive than it should be. UCLA has guaranteed housing for all years now. I’m not that familiar with Merced. Irvine has housing, but you may be a 15 minute drive away and some of the closer apartments aren’t that great (a common problem at most campuses). I know several kids that have had cost and distance problems in San Diego. My point was less a defense of Santa Cruz - just a warning that searching for housing is something most students confront at college. It often isn’t easy.

I feel it’s the same in San Luis Obispo. The housing shortage adds a huge layer of stress.
