UCF 2020 Admission-still waiting

There is a thread here specific to Wait List.

Daughter waitlisted yesterday
SAT - 1160
GPA - 3.90 weighted
Please, Any comments on her chances to get in?

I doubt if any of us have any clue on her chances, but I think she must have some realistic chance or they wouldn’t have put her on a wait list to begin with.

If you are a Florida resident, by all means have her take the SAT again! She is only 10 points away from 75% Bright Futures…which is like $20K over 4 years. AND they superscore for Bright Futures, so she just has to do a tiny bit better in one area to get $20K.

Another factor is that UF starts announcing acceptances at 6PM tomorrow. UCF is the 2nd choice school of many, many UF applicants, so when accepted students decide to go to UF, spots open up at UCF.

Good luck to her!

Good luck. My daughter is in the same boat. Hoping the UF announcements hurry the results up.

Hi I am glad I found this forum. Like most parents here just frustrated on the delay from UCF. My daughter applied in November 2019 and all seemed okay then it stated she was missing various items which we know were sent. So she resent and is now being told she may not hear anything until May 31st which is unbelievable. Multiple calls different information every time from each person it is mind blowing. This is her 1st choice she has already been accepted to UT. She has worked so hard her whole life when it comes to school and just pray it works out in her benefit…thanks for letting me vent

What is your daughter’s “application status?”

You have to check that on her MyUCF account. If you don’t know how to do that, this link will help…

https://www.ucf.edu/admissions/undergraduate/question/how-do-i-check-my-application-status-using-myucf/

My DD has been on the waitlist since January and on April 15th I had her request an expedited decision admission because she needed to commit to her second choice school by May 15th. Yo our surprise on Friday, April 17th she was offered admission to the summer term. I’m so excited because I thought she would be denied since we didn’t know by requesting the expedited decision if there would be any space available.

Thank you. Did you send an email requesting an expedited admission decision?

Thank you for letting us know. I think she will do the same.

Summer admission means she only has to complete one online class during Summer B and she’s in for the Fall.

Congratulations!

And prepare to be inundated with emails from UCF! They all contain useful information, so don’t disregard them. Here’s the first few steps after acceptance:

  1. Commit to UCF by paying your $200 enrollment deposit. Online is the fastest, best way.
  2. You will receive confirmation, which will also tell you that you are now eligible to apply for dorms. Again, do that quickly because dorms are first-come, first-served and you are late to the party.
  3. Apply for dorms (another deposit, I believe $250).
  4. You will receive confirmation that you have a dorm room.

After those first steps are a bunch of other things to do. You’ll need an immunization form from your daughter’s doctor.

She will also need to take a math aptitude test ($10, I think) before she enrolls in a math course. Don’t have to do that right away, but I think it’s best to get it behind you so it doesn’t hold up your registration process later.

She will have to sign up for online Orientation (not sure how much that is). There is also an online orientation for parents that looks very helpful. Her orientation is mandatory; parent orientation is optional. Class registration is one of the last steps during orientation.

Congratulations again, and good luck!

Hi I’m not sure where to ask this question but I’m a little nervous about applying to UCF because my stats are low.
My stats are:
SAT: 1120
ACT: 22
GPA: 3.1UW 3.7W
I’ve also only taken AP classes and honors only…if that makes a difference?
I’m also still studying and have registered to retake both the SAT and ACT
I’ve also heard that UCF doesn’t care much about EC but i think I have a lot?
I was also wondering if you didn’t get accepted into the fall term, could you apply for the summer term?
So basically I really want to go to UCF but…do i have a chance?

Yes, you have a good chance. My daughter’s scores were right where yours are, and she made it.

There are three options for your admission. You should apply for Fall 2021, and you will automatically be considered for the other two options – one of which I personally think might be better than Fall. The other options are Summer 2021 and Spring 2022.

A Summer admission, IMHO, is UCF’S best kept secret. All that means is that you have to take ONE course online during Summer B – which is right after you graduate from high school. My daughter actually took two courses in Summer B and got A’s in both. You have to take 9 hours in the summer to graduate anyway, so an early start is quite helpful.

One suggestion about SAT/ACT. I believe UCF has some test preparation help available. Use the search bar on the UCF website to find it, and use it – and then do practice test after practice test. Good luck!

The other comment I have is regarding GPA. Every university recalculates your GPA, and everybody does it differently. UCF uses ONLY the ** core courses** required for high school graduation by the State of Florida, so your grades in elective classes will not count. They award one bonus point for an AP core class with a B or higher, and one-half bonus point for Honors. The effect of that is that your weighted GPA will probably be a little lower than your school calculates.

If by EC you mean extra-curriculars, YES UCF is interested in those. Be sure to include mention of them in both your resume and essay. Extra-curriculars are a big part of who you are as a person, and you gain a lot of transferrable life skills in extra-curriculars. UCF IS INTERESTED in the whole person, not just the grades on paper.

A little further clarification on your extra-curriculars…

Don’t just LIST your extra-curriculars. Weave them into your essay, and most important – explain what you LEARNED from them!

Did you learn leadership skills? Did you learn to fail, and get up again and again until you succeed? Did you learn to work collaboratively with fellow students on some extra-curricular project? Did you gain an understanding of people who are less fortunate?

What’s important is NOT what titles you held, but what you LEARNED from your experiences.

Thank you so much!! I truly appreciate the time you took to reply. This really made me feel more confident
And for the SAT/ACT i took a boot camp course and retook both tests again and am waiting for the results now!

Also just to clarify when i apply for the fall term, UCF will also consider me for summer and spring as well?
I just wanted to double check because I’m still a bit nervous and wanted to make the chance of me getting accepted higher.
Also could i ask when your daughter applied?

Again thank so much!

Yes, you are automatically in the mix for all three possibilities.

My daughter is at UCF now, so she’s a year ahead of you. She applied for Fall 2020 only, but got an acceptance for Summer 2020. She did two courses online from home during the summer (only one is required) and is now at UCF. I don’t remember her application and acceptance dates, but I think her acceptance was in January.

I’m not positive this is the sequence, but I think they first send Fall offers. Then they send Summer offers, and the applicants who don’t get either go on a waiting list.

In late March/early April, UF and FSU make their offers. Some UCF applicants who get offers from those schools then decline UCF and UCF makes additional offers to people on the waiting list Then later, they make offers for the following Spring to people on the waiting lists.

A LOT of people got in from those waiting lists. There are some historical numbers somewhere on the UCF site – possibly someone else can tell you where.

You’ll see a waiting list thread here and can get a better idea from that.

In January, we took a tour of UCF because the original plan was to wait for UF/FSU. However, about halfway through the tour, our daughter said, “THIS is what I want. I’m accepting UCF as soon as we get back home.”

If you get a Summer 2021 offer and want to go to UCF, by all means ACCEPT it!

Does anyone know if UCF still has the Top 10 Knights policy? My son applied over a month ago and his status still says in review. He has a 1500 SAT, 4.4 GPA, has EC’s and volunteer. Maybe it is just taking extra time this year. My other son got his acceptance right away.

@Tgh123
I would think you should hear soon. My S21 applied early Sept and heard back about a month ago, with his acceptance to to BHC last week. Your son has similar stats. We are OOS, so I can’t help with your Top Ten Knights question.

@JimDadinmia How does she like it? UCF is definitely high up there for my son right now, but we haven’t visited. We would all have to quarantine after a visit so we will have to wait right now. Is there enough going on on campus for them to get a little bit of a college experience?

She LOVES it!

On campus life, it’s a mixed bag. All of her classes are online, which is harder I think and she doesn’t get out of the dorm as much as I’d like her to. She is working very hard and getting good grades.

She loves Towers and her roommates are all great, but without in-person classes she actually hasn’t really learned her way around the campus very well yet.

There are very few actual “activities” going on. This week was Homecoming, so they had a music/fireworks show on Friday night and a watch party yesterday afternoon – but no Spirit Splash, which is THE Homecoming tradition. She didn’t attend any of those events or the game, but they watched the fireworks from their dorm windows.

The football games have 25% attendance, with only 3,000 student tickets available. Yesterday they only had about 8,000 fans in a stadium (The Bounce House) that holds 45,000 and is usually packed.

There is a huge event called “Light Up UCF” normally held in November-December, but it’s been canceled this year. It’s like a carnival with rides and an ice-skating rink (daughter is a high-level competitive figure skater), but not this year.

If your son is in the BHC LLC, he will be in Tower 3, which actually has an exit into East Knights Plaza, where he will find the bookstore, the all-important Amazon Hub Locker, Jimmy Johns, Burger U (best chicken tenders ever) and a food service outlet. Our daughter is in Tower 4, which shares a courtyard with T3, and those two dorms are very conveniently located.

Glad to hear she is finding things to enjoy! Want to make sure he doesn’t regret going somewhere and having nothing to do. I have read many kids are struggling with lack of activities around different campuses.
Our D18 signed a lease for an apartment across from her school in NY back in Dec and has weathered this there so far. There is not much to do there but she loves the freedom and responsibility of living on her own.
Hoping that things get back to “normal” soon!

There are things to do.

For example they have a good gym right there in Knights Plaza (less than 1/4 mile walk from Tower 3 – and with a Dunkin’ Donuts right next door!) and an amazing gym in the southern part of campus. My daughter went to the amazing gym today with one of her roommates…first time.

Both gyms are open on a limited basis, but I’m not sure of the details. They were requiring reservations previously, but I don’t know if they are still doing that.
