[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 62/570
[] AP (place score in parentheses): World History (3), Calculus AB (4), Chemistry (4) U.S. History (5), English Language (3)
[] IB (place score in parentheses): N/A
[] Senior Year Course Load: AP Physics B, Band, AP Government, AP Statistics, AP Calculus BC (double), AP Latin, AP English Literature, Jazz/Marching band (switches at semester)
[] Number of other EA applicants in your school: One other that I know of.
[li] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): National Merit Semifinalst, AP Scholar with Distinction, National Chemistry Olympiad Local Champion and National Finalist[/ul]
[/li]

Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parentheses): NHS (VP, 2 years), Quiz Bowl (Captain, 3 years. State runners-up last year), Band (Lead saxophone and section leader, 3 years), Debate Club (Co-founder and President, 1 year), Junior Classical League (Club and State Board VP, 2 years), AP/Test Club (President, 1 year)
[] Job/Work Experience: N/A
[li] Volunteer/Community service: I just put on the application something like “Volunteer opportunities within National Honor Society” because it was a bunch of little things. Around 150 hours I would say though.[/ul]
[/li]

Writing (Write a brief description and Rate Quality on 1-10 Scale; 10 as Best):[ul]
[] Essays (Include Subjects):
[li] Common App Main: I wrote about jazz and how it changed my thinking. In middle school, I was strictly a math and science guy. Even with music, I believed there was a right or wrong answer for everything. Jazz taught me a lot of things are open to interpretation (9/10)[/li][] EC Short Answer:
[] Extended essay(which topic): (You are you and your…) I said I am me and my tacklebox. It was about fishing with my dad and how my organization and preparation of my tacklebox represented me. I can’t really describe it, but it’s better than how I made it sound. (8ish/10)
[] Optional Essay: I said my favorite book was Moneyball, and my favorite movie as Good Will Hunting. I kind of had trouble putting my love for these into words… (6/10)
[] Why Chicago: Talked about Quiz Bowl and how their Division III status actually appealed to me because there wouldn’t be the established social distinctions between the “jocks” and “nerds”, because everyone’s a nerd there. (8/10)
[] Other: N/A [/ul]
[] Teacher Recommendation #1: Quiz coach, JCL advisor, and Latin teacher. He loves me, pretty much. It was a very good recommendation, in my opinion. (9/10)
[] Teacher Recommendation #2: English teacher and AP Club advisor. He totally loves me, but we have a sort of dry relationship. We talk a lot about books and writing and we joke a lot, and he’s a very sarcastic guy. I love it. His rec was less about structured academics and more about my love for books and learning. (7.5/10)
[] Counselor Rec: Haven’t seen it, but I can only assume it’s perfect. I’m literally her favorite student. She tells me she talks about me to her family when she goes home, so…yeah. (10/10)
[] Additional Rec: N/A
[] Interview: N/A
[] Art Supplement: N/A
Other[ul]
[] Date Submitted App: November 8th
[] State (if domestic applicant): Nevada
[] Country (if international applicant): USA
[] School Type: Public, not very rigorous, ~2000 students
[] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: M
[] Income Bracket: $100,000
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None[/ul]
Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Test scores, essays, counselor rec
[] Weaknesses: Favorite things essay, lack of “outstanding” ECs, but it’s just got to be the GPA. Not even an upward trend either. Ugh. I had a really tough year personally between 4th and 5th semester, so grades kind of sucked. I’m totally back on track though, hopefully that’s enough.
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: GPA.
[] What would you have done differently?:[/ul]Other Factors:
**General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc: Sigh. Deferred’s not the end, officially, but…ugh. Sucks. I’ll fight through to the end. I’ll submit my 7th semester grades, have my counselor send a letter to my regional admissions director, get another rec if I can, the whole shebang. We’ll see what happens. Parents are pushing me toward a safety, though. **

Decision: Accepted

[] Ethnicity: Asian
[] Gender: M
[] Income Bracket: Not sure
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Haha okay.
Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Why Essay. Also I’m easy to quantify in the 60-90 second one-page exposure to officers you get at the committee level (Jazz playing environmental science/business guy).
[] Weaknesses: Too many
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Dumb luck and Jesus Christ
[li] What would you have done differently?: Write a new common application essay. I didn’t like the one I sent in. Otherwise nothing.[/ul]Other Factors:[/li]**General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc: ** Got deferred from Columbia about six days before so my hopes weren’t high. Mom couldn’t drive home from work because she was crying too hard. Overall, I don’t deserve this, but I’ll run with it and take full advantage of this incredible opportunity. Class of 2018 here we gooo

HERE’S MY ADVICE FOR FUTURE APPLICANTS: 1) Read and study all 100+ or so extended essays on the UChicago Post Your Essay thread. 2) BE AUTHENTIC. I know UChicago is about quirky and edgy, but I don’t think that every essay in the entire application should be about how weird you are, otherwise you come off as a manic-dream pixie girl/boy stereotype, you feel? There’s a line between showing yourself as different for the sake of being different and actually having a logical reason for being different. Don’t cross that line. 3) Answer the Tumblr postcards they send out in the mail. Demonstrates interest and gives you a little more exposure in your application, which is always valuable.

Good luck to all future applicants!

-Volunteer/Community service: around 130 hours working with typical and disabled children at the local science center (won a nice award for distinguished service from this)

Writing:

-Common App Main: my disabled brother giving me the motivation to come back from a broken foot to lead the cross country team senior year
-Extended essay: mantis shrimp, a formal, analytic essay. I wanted to show my love of philosophical thinking
-Optional Essay: formal as well, one paragraph about my favorite book, one about my love of gardening
-Why Chicago: the basic “I’m a great fit”, I also said how excited I was to run for UChicago
-Teacher Recommendations: Everyone here always says their teachers “love me/want to adopt me 10/10”. That definitely doesn’t apply to me, but I picked teachers that saw my best side
-Counselor Rec: I’m one of only 40 seniors she has and she knows my family well, I’m thinking this helped it stand out from the more cookie-cutter ones from overloaded counselors in larger schools
-Interview: on-campus, I tried to tie everything I did back to my intellectual passion and drive I get from my disabled brother
-Date Submitted App: October 31st
-State (if domestic applicant): FL
-School Type: smallish, selective private
-Ethnicity: white
-Gender: M
-Income Bracket: didn’t request financial aid

Reflection:

Strengths: the all-mighty stats (SAT, AP scores, SAT subject tests) were all very good in both the verbal and quantitative arenas. I only had a few activities, but I did them at the highest level I could
Weaknesses: my GPA wasn’t great, but fortunately I had an uptrend as the courses got harder
Why you think you were accepted: the stats got me onto the playing field, all the subjective areas must have appealed to the person(s) making the decision. I really can’t say I had any advantage over some of the others who were deffered honestly.

General comments:

Be your best self on your application. If the school is a good fit for you, you’ll show it and have a great shot. Good luck to the RDers and deffered!

I got deferred and withdrew my app because I got into an ED school that I am really happy to be attending.

Peace. good job.

Essays (rating 1-10, details):
Common App: 8/10: I did the life story one, because growing up overseas in a really small community (graduating class 23) on a small island is really odd. Really personal I suppose, but I related it back to an experience spending New years in Romania
Supplemental: Joke Essay 9/10- A really funny and purposely awkward joke from my favorite comedian. Everyone loved it.
Favorites Essay: 10/10 Wrote a story about a “what-if” romance between the artist Jean-Michel Basquiat and the photographer vivian maier if they had grown up in the same time period-expressed my love for both, very artistic
Why UChicago: 7/10: Rather average

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):
Teacher Rec #1: 11/10 My AP Lit teacher who adores me to no end, really knows me on a bunch of different levels and also went to Uchicago
Teacher Rec #2: 7/10 AP Bio teacher, may have forgotten me a bit after I moved but I was one of the youngest to take her class and had the highest grades so she should at least have painted me as kind of smart
Counselor Rec: 10/10, crafted depending on meetings and discussions with parents, we reallly put in everything
Additional Rec: nay
Interview: was absolutely awful. the girl I had seemed completely uninterested from the get-go and in a hurry to leave, as soon as i would answer a question she would move on. I was really disappointed and I think it was rather unfair, especially since my GPA is a lot lower than most deferred people. I’ve got great social skills so this was a real bummer.

Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: i have no idea, i totally thought id get rejected. Im thinking my recommendations were dripping with dazzle.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: None-ya

General Comments:
The school’s I grew up in were full of kids who either joined the military or went to community college…unlike a lot of kids who apply to ivies who have been training for college since elementary…I also couldn’t take half of the APs I wanted to due to credits not transferring or not having the right background courses which weren’t required at other schools. rather lame.
but its amazing i even got deferred, dont expect me to be in the accepted posts come march!

Hey UChicago class of 2018! If you got accepted, can you please post your essays or PM me? I really need inspiration. I am applying EA this year and would appreciate all of your help!

Thanks!
