UChicago Questions? Ask an admissions counselor!

@UChicago Hello! I was fortunate enough to land a spot for the fall semester as part of UChicago’s class of 2022. I have had some health issues that my counselor can confirm over this semester. If I receive a few “B” grades on my transcript and I ask my counselor to send a letter going into detail about these issues, will my acceptance be rescinded? My academic record thus far has been almost spotless and I don’t want the University to think that because I was accepted, I became lazy this first semester of senior year.

You could end up with all Bs and you still won’t be rescinded. It is called “senior slide” for a reason.

@phoenixw I suggested you call the admissions office and ask them if they have found an alumni interviewer. If they haven’t, or if one isn’t available, they won’t hold this against you.

@UChicago I was deferred from EDI. I have since wrote a completely different Common App essay based on a different prompt. I feel the new essay better showcases my character. Is there any way to “update” my Common App essay for UChicago?

@UChicago Would you advise against pasting a link to a youtube video of an EC in the additional information section of the common app? Or would that be ok? Idk if you guys print the PDFs and can’t click links, or want to save that section for more serious things.

Hi Grace,
I was deferred from Early Action in the early round and I have changed my application plan to ED 2. I had submitted my essays via common app but I want to make changes on my U Chicago essay. Is it possible? Can I submit a new one through my Chicago application portal, would you recommend doing so?

Would a campus visit to Chicago would also increase my chances?

Thanks a lot!

@borrowedtime13 Hello there!
I saw your comment and I wanted to let you know that I used a link in my creative supplemental essay that I submitted to UChicago and I have recently been accepted ED into their institution. I believe that putting it in the additional information section will yield the result of them being able to access it because when you are doing the “final review” of your common application, the pdf it produces includes everything in the preview. Just my thoughts! Thought it might help, good luck my friend!

@UChicago Hi,
where can i find the link for uchicago free online financial aid worksheet? I already applied and have an account.

Forgive me if the answer to this is somewhere in the previous 187 pages, but I’m wondering about merit scholarships and whether they are awarded on top of UChicago Grant aid or in place of it.

If, say, our EFC is around $30K and Chicago covers the rest with a grant (roughly $45K), and my son gets admitted with a merit scholarship for $5K, would that award just replace $5K of the grant or reduce the amount we pay by $5K? Similarly, if he gets any outside scholarships, would those reduce the grant?

(I hope these questions aren’t too basic–it’s our first time through this process, and I’m trying to get a realistic sense of whether U Chicago’s even an option, financially speaking.)

Call FA and ask. You can also peruse the FA website as, at least last year, they explained what stacked and what didn’t. My general recall is that merit and need from them stack, merit from outside (say, a Rotary scholarship) might reduce the need part. But not sure. Obviously, the university’s merit and FA will be “co-dependent” even if they claim it’s “stackable” :slight_smile: For instance - and an extreme example - if you are eligible for full tuition/room-board via financial grants, but they also award you $5,000 in “merit”, they are very likely to reduce the need-based portion by the same amount.

Also, check out the current FA handbook for any such info:

https://financialaid.uchicago.edu/sites/default/files/uploads/1819-full-FA-info-guide.pdf

BTW, they come up with their own version of “EFC” which may or may not correlate with FAFSA’s. FYI.

So far the outside merit scholarship my DD has stacked 100% on top of FA even though the UChicago policy is a 50/50 split.

Also, the scholarship organization requires the universities it gives the money to use no more than 50% of the scholarship to reduce FA.

@glassofwater2017 Please e-mail your admissions counselor, and they will let you know if they need additional information from your school counselor. Please also know that it’s very rare for offers of admission to be rescinded.

@littlebluish SAT II subject tests are a completely optional part of our application, but we will consider any supplemental scores that are submitted.

@traviata Feel free to send updates to your admissions counselor or upload them to your UChicago Account.

@borrowedtime13 Yes, you are welcome to post a link to a YouTube video in the additional information section of the Common App.

@ek99charlotte Students are welcome to upload updates or new academic accomplishments to their UChicago Account, but we ask that you do not submit new essays.

@lolpro2018 The financial aid worksheet will appear in students UChicago Accounts if they expressed interest in applying for need-based aid. If you do not see the worksheet in your account you can reach out to collegeadmissions@uchicago.edu with your reference number and we can get that sorted out for you!

@UChicago

If I am taking the February ACT, am I at any disadvantage compared to the other RD applicants? And is my application reviewed at all before the Feb. score comes in?

@UChicago

Can you, please, tell us when the ED II decisions will be available? (Exactly :P)

I called them to ask and they said “We don’t have a date finalized just yet, but we will post on social media once the date is confirmed.”

@DownRiver55 There is no disadvantage in taking the February ACT for the Regular Decision round, just make sure to submit self-reported test scores. You can reach out to your regional admissions counselor to make sure we have them on file!

@UChicago I applied RD and got an email from a financial aid counselor regarding an issue. When I replied, the counselor emailed back saying that the issue was now fixed and I should expect to receive an aid decision in a few days. Does this mean anything significant since the actual college decision comes out in a month or so? Thank you. :slight_smile:

@UChicago Does the university of chicago send likely letters or early writes to regular decision applicants? If so, who did that happen?

@Nuolong Please feel free to check back in with a financial aid officer. Financial aid packages do not come out in advance of the admissions decisions.

@eviola17 Yes, we do send a very small number of “likely” letters to Regular Decision applicants with particularly strong application profiles. The majority of our students—even many who are exceptionally academically talented—will not receive a notice of this kind, but many still hear great news from us when final decisions are released!

@UChicago

Hi, I found out today that I am waitlisted for the Class of 2022. If I have new updates, should I email my admissions counselor or upload them to my portal?

Thanks!
