UChicago Questions? Ask an admissions counselor!

Hi Grace,

Are admitted students (who accepted offers of admission) required to send in a midyear report?

UChicago’s post in “What Decisions Mean + Advice for Deferred Students,” also available on their admissions website:

This is a little lower than normal, but not catastrophically so, especially since more students were flat-out rejected this year than normal and, as with every school, many deferrals were issued which could be considered “courtesies,” softening the blow for legacy children and families and/or maintaining relationships with particular secondary schools. On the flip side, of course, some have no way of knowing if they’re one of these themselves (and therefore have a very minimal chance of RD acceptance).

^Thanks my bad, I must have gotten the number confused with another school/something I read.

glencoco, at this point, your aid decision is only an estimate; you will receive a final aid package in the Spring once you have submitted your FAFSA and 2012 tax returns. Strictly speaking, students may only “appeal” a final aid decision; there is plenty of time between now and final aid packages to provide additional information and context before a final decision is released. While estimates are reasonably reliable as markers of what your final package will look like, we realize that finances in families can change from year to year. If your family does not feel that the information provided in the FAFSA and tax returns will reflect your current financial situation adequately, you are welcome to provide an additional letter detailing any other circumstances (cost of caring for an ailing relative, severance package appearing like a windfall, etc) which our aid office will be happy to consider as they review your aid application and make a final package. We don’t want cost to be the reason a student winds up not choosing UChicago, so erring on the side of providing more information rather than less is useful for our aid office as they determine final awards. You go, Glencoco! :)

bigguk, the number of students deferred changes from year to year, but we tend to accept about 10% of our deferred students in our regular round. We will know that you were a deferred student when we review your application in our regular decision round, but we will reconsider your entire application, including any updates that you send.

classycolleges, we require all students who are still actively in our applicant or accepted students pool (whether deferred, RD applicants, admitted, or admitted and attending) to submit a midyear report.

Hi Grace,
So here’s the deal; I’ve been accepted EA, but may end up with a C or possibly 2 C’s on my midyear report, both of which in are in online AP classes. What is the likelihood that this will result in the University rescinding my offer of admission? My guidance counselor will attest to the fact that the grades are not indicative of a lack of effort, but rather an unfamiliarity with the online format and some rather inaccessible teachers and lack of resources to help me through some of the more difficult material.

Hi Grace,

I was just wondering

How many students receive merit scholarships and what amounts they come in

How many students were accepted this year EA

Thanks in advance for your input!

Hi Gracie,
My son was accepted EA and received a presidential scholarship to be used during the summers- of his fresh and soph yr. Is this instead of or in addition to merit aid? He is a NMS semifinalist as well Thanks

CJohnH, we would hope that you can try your best to get grades of B or better in your courses, but if you do wind up receiving Cs, I would definitely make sure that your counselor includes a short note as to the difficulty of the online course format for you and the inaccessibility of those teachers. This would not be cause for major concern with us given your explanation, but we would want to know the context.

extrapolate, approximately 10% of our incoming class every year comes in with some type of UChicago-sponsored merit scholarship. We accepted approximately 13% of our EA applicants this year.

mitzvahmom, the Presidential scholarship is a scholarship that will guarantee funding to a student for the research project or internship of the student’s choice over the summer. The scholarship will not come as a direct deduction on the tuition bill, as would other scholarships, but the student will work with our Career Advancement office to find an appropriate opportunity for use of the scholarship for two summers, and would receive funds during the summer either as a stipend or paycheck given directly to the student, depending on their choice of activity. The student may know that they are fully funded for research or internships for their first two summers in school, and students will likely choose to apply this funding to the “student contribution” portion of a financial aid package or any other expenses that they would choose to use it for (summer housing, books during the year, travel, etc).

Hi I was just wondering where in my UChicago account can I find information regarding to merit scholarships? Like how would I know if I got one?

@jamesbond1 at the bottom of your acceptance letter page there should be a link that says “Merit Award”. If you don’t have such a link, it’s likely that you didn’t get merit aid.

Hi Grace,
I have a question about midyear reports as well. Do I need to send midyear reports for college transcripts as well as high school ones? I’ve just finished a Calc III class and I’m going to take a linear alg class next semester. Does UChicago want another one of my transcripts for these scores as well? College classes do not count as credit in my high school nor affect my GPA. Also so excited about being accepted  Do you have any suggestions for where to go when I come visit?

I also read in the earlier posts that Uchicago offered national merit scholarships. Does this only apply to students who indicated Uchicago as a first choice school?

Thank you! Was this awarded in lieu of merit aid ( he cked the box) or could he potentially get a merit award as well?

Hi Grace,
I was deferred (possibly for poor fall 2011 grades). I received all A’s at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities (full time) this semester. Is that going to help my chances for the regular decision pool? I’m also going to be doing robotics this spring, should I send some pictures of the robot to my admissions officer to show the kinds of things we do in robotics?

Hi Grace,

If we accept our offer of admission and then submit the $500 deposit (because you can’t submit the housing deposit until after you’ve accepted the offer of admission, right?), but later decide not to attend, is the deposit refundable? I have heard from some sources that if we request a refund in writing by May 1, it is refundable. Thanks!

Dear Grace,

Thank you for your patient replies to questions on this thread. I hope you are enjoying your holiday break.

My son was admitted to UChicago and Caltech in EA, and still applying to a few more schools. UChicago is where he wants to go because of a number of factors. However, money will be an important consideration for us as we don’t have much in savings. I am curious as to how merit scholarships are awarded. He didn’t get any at this point, but, looking at his academic record, he seems to deserve it. He has near perfect test scores and a straight 4.0 GPA, taking very challenging courses, including many honor and AP. He has also taken and continues to take our local public university courses since 10th grade, earning A and A+ in them (2 graduate level courses this semester). On top of it he is involved in many time demanding ECs. Do the students who get merit scholarships at UChicago have even better academic records?

P.S. I’m glad to hear that some scholarships are awarded later in the spring and hope it will still come his way.

Thank you so much for time and answering all these questions like this.

I also apologize in advance if mine has been asked (I only read through the first 38 pages before I clicked to the last post).

As a transfer student, I’m wondering if my past materials from when I first applied (application, essay, recs, etc) will be kept and/or looked at with this years app? Also, if the decision I was given (wait-listed) will be considered/have any effect on my application this year?

Thank you so much for any help you can give! And Happy Holidays as well~

Hi Grace,

I know this may seem a trivial issue to worry about, but UChicago is my dream university, and I don’t want to take any chances. I’m not sure if this is a huge mistake or not, but I wanted your opinion:

In the optional essay, I had written that ‘Holden Caulfield’ is my favorite fictional character. However, in the ‘Why UChicago?’ essay, I’d used an example, where I’d written that Sherlock Holmes is my favorite fictional character. I re-read my essay 7 times, yet I couldn’t spot this stupid mistake! Truth be told, they’re both my favorites. But I’m not sure the person reading my essay will see it the same way. Do you think it’ll affect my chances significantly? Should I send in an explanation for this error?

What sort of material(s) does UChicago expect or want to see if you were deferred? I mean besides the obvious mid-year transcript. Thanks!
