UChicago Questions? Ask an admissions counselor!

Hey Grace!

I was deferred by UChicago EA. In the update on my UChicago account it says that :

“Please arrange for your mid-year report and an updated transcript to be sent to our office as soon as they are available.”

However, I have some questions:

 1. Is it necessary to send an updated transcript if I send a mid year report?
 2. If yes, how can I send the updated transcript?
 3. And my counselor has already sent my mid year report. However, this does NOT appear as “DOWNLOADED” by UChicago in my Common App account. Is this normal?

Thank you for you help!

Hi Grace,
I’m a junior, so this question would be for next year’s application round: Earlier, you mentioned that the teacher reccomendations should be from “core” academic subjects. Does that mean I can’t send in recommendations from my foreign language (Latin) or music (orchestra) teacher? Both of them have taught me every year since freshman year and will teach me senior year, so I would like to ask them if I can. Thank you.

Hi Grace!

I want to major in economics, how competitive is that major specifically? Also what do you think is a decent gpa to be accepted?

UCHicago,

My daughter just was commended for Presidential Scholars from our state. She has EA from Uchicago. We have applied for finaid and merit aid. Will letting the University know about this make any difference to potentially money that she might receive in scholarships? We unfortunately belong to the category where our income barely passes the too high mark for needbased aid but a $250K college tag is not affordable to us.

jojocircus, we are still in the process of downloading many student documents, so if your material has been submitted, rest assured that we will download it shortly. It is not necessary to send an additional updated transcript if your midyear report includes all grades you received in your first semester.

nightmelody, foreign language teachers who have taught you beyond the beginning level are certainly appropriate, so it would be fine to request a recommendation from your Latin teacher. While your orchestra teacher may be a fine choice for an additional recommendation, we would prefer that you not submit a recommendation from an orchestra or music teacher as one of your core academic recommendations.

Hello southend, students do not apply to UChicago majors specifically, so there is no “competition” per se required to get in to the major; all accepted students are eligible to major in any option that UChicago offers. However, we do hope to see that applicants who show a strong interest in our economics program have an appropriate mathematics background, hopefully including strong performance in mathematics through calculus. Because GPAs differ widely from school to school (some out of 4, some out of 5, some out of 100, etc) it is difficult for us to provide an acceptable GPA or range for students, but most of our admitted students perform strongly in a rigorous schedule, usually (if a class ranks) somewhere in the top 10-15% of their high school classes.

Dipali, we are happy to consider any material you wish to send to us; while I am not sure if this material specifically would impact the decision of our merit committee (simply because I am not aware of the specifics of the program you mention) you are more than welcome to have your daughter email in a description of the achievement to her regional admissions counselor.

I noticed that unlike many schools, UChicago’s supplement had a spot for listing legacy connections but it didn’t restrict this to only parents and grandparents. Are aunts, uncles, and cousins still counted as legacy for admissions purposes?

Hi Grace, thanks for your earlier response. My son studies the ib diploma, where they are given a predicted grade. Does UChicago give weightage to this predicted grade, or only the achieved grades in school exams. Thanks

Grace, do you have any statistics regarding transfer students, particularly OLDER transfer students? I’m 44 year old (Hispanic) & just returned back to school (history major; 3.88 GPA, Phi Theta Kappa, Who’s Who & taking Honors classes) & I’m wondering if it’s even reasonable to transfer to UofC or do I should I wait for graduate school?

Hi Grace.
My counselor said she would send the midyear transcript, but she said that sending the Common App form for the counselor was unnecessary. Is it ok to just send the transcript?

Hi Grace:

Would you please disclose the amount of time the admissions dept spends on reviewing each application. I ask because considering 30K in applications it just does not seem feasible that all essays and Ec’s can be evaluated?

Also would you be so kind as to walk us through the evaluation process step by step from receipt to rejection and from receipt to acceptance.

Thank you so much

william95, technically parent and grandparental connections (including step-parents or grandparents) are the only true “legacies” here, but you are welcome to let us know if you have aunts, uncles, etc who have attended UChicago-- there is no harm in listing a family connection in that section.

ajd297, we do lean on the side of the IB course grades students have received, and any exam grades that they may have, but if a student’s school does provide IB predicted grades, we will consider them in the context of the rest of the student’s application.

franko5150, we do not have specific statistics regarding transfer students, whether of traditional or non-traditional age; this is generally because our acceptance of transfer students can vary widely from year to year depending on space available in the College and the quality of our transfer student pool. We have in the past accepted transfer students who are older than traditional age; acceptance to UChicago is not a guarantee for any student, and our transfer student pool can be especially competitive, but I would certainly encourage you to review our transfer student application guidelines if you remain interested in considering the College: https://collegeadmissions.uchicago.edu/apply/applicants/transfer/</a></p>

fortheluvofprada, a transcript with your updated midyear grades is sufficient, although if it is possible to submit it, it can be helpful for the transcript to be accompanied by the Common App midyear report form (simply for the speed of our material processing-- this is not a requirement and you are not placed at any disadvantage if your counselor is not able to complete the form).

sosomenza, it is quite difficult for us to place an exact time value on the time we spend reviewing each individual’s application, as the review of applications is a multi-step process. Applicants to UChicago have their application reviewed by at least two separate readers (the first being their regional admissions counselor, who is familiar with the opportunities in the state/country where the student attends school), and final decisions are made in our admissions committee. All portions of a student’s application are reviewed in every step-- as we use a holistic reading process we do not employ any “sort” mechanisms or cutoffs for scores, grades, etc, so all of our applicants have the entirety of their application read by an admissions counselor and discussed before a final decision is made. While application reading keeps us quite busy this time of year, please rest assured that we are adequately staffed to review the volume of applications we have received, and that all applicants’ materials will be given our full holistic review and consideration.

If a student is accepted to Chicago EA and submits the enrollment deposit, are they obligated to withdraw other apps?

Hi ! i applied during the early action process and got deferred so i send a letter of intent to my regional admission officer around 3 weeks ago and they never replied. Do they usually reply and if they don’t how can i know that they considered what I wrote. Sorry if this is just me being paranoid… but thats what the admission process does to you !
Thanks so much !

Hi Grace… Thanks for your reply. Given the large no of regular applications, what is the likely admit rate for deferred applicants? The letter sent to my son stated an historical acceptance rate of 10% from the deferred pool. I suppose that was before you received the record 30000+ applications?

Hi, I’m considering transferring to the University of Chicago from Indiana University and I was wondering what the process is like and my chances of acceptance.

In my first semester at IU, I’ve gotten a 3.838 GPA and been involved in some clubs. I’m looking to major in Business(Most likely finance). My GPA should remain high after second semster (Atleast 3.7+) and I’ve been trying to get involved in more leadership clubs.

Also, I’m concerned that about how many credits would transfer and how far behind I would be compared to other students.

Does Highschool GPA factor in for sophomore transfer students?

Hi,

I am an RD applicant and I have not yet received a username/login of any sort… is this reason for concern?

Hi Grace! I’m an admitted student who will attend. I just found out that my counselor hasn’t sent in updated transcripts yet. Should I contact my regional admissions officer and let them know or if my school office sends updated transcripts Monday is that okay? Is this a cause for concern?

And also, do accepted students just need to send updated transcripts or the full midyear report through the school counselor?

Hi Grace,
I am an adult who works as a volunteer in my local high school, helping seniors with the college application process. This is an overwhelmingly low-income school district. I just found out today that one of our very best students, who has UChicago as her absolute, first choice, did not know that the FAFSA and CSS Profile were due by Feb 1st. Her mother is deceased, her father spends the vast majority of his time halfway across the country from where the student lives, etc. In any case, I urged this student to get these forms filed immediately. My question, of course, is whether this student is “out of luck” re: financial aid. My instinct is that this is someone UChicago would "snap up’ as an admittee for many reasons and my concern for her is that her naivete surrounding the process is going to leave her in dire straits. Any response you can give me would be most appreciated. Thanks for your time!

Hi Grace,
I sent my income tax returns last week and the confirmation hasn’t showed up yet in my UChicago account. How long does it take for it to update?
