I posted this on the duke site and I got response from them but know I want uchicago’s perspective. I’m undecided but thinking about following a pre med track. Please help me choose!!!

The UChicago crowd will tell you to go to UChicago and the Duke crowd will tell you to go to Duke, but the UChicago crowd is correct.

luvxmas,
Historically I believe Duke has outperformed Chicago in med school acceptances. I remember seeing (but can’t now locate) a thread that had links to statistics. Someone will probably come up with it for you. However, I also vaguely remember that looking at the numbers within larger contexts painted a more nuanced picture (partly attributable to the fact that UC grads in typical pre-med majors tend more towards graduate school than med school). You’ll need to be thoughtful in how you interpret the statistics, if they’re provided.

The above notwithstanding, Chicago’s star is on the rise and its increasing prestige, along with a somewhat increasing pre-professional bent among its students, seems to be translating into greater success (not that it was ever poor) in med and law school placements. Unfortunately, the school tends to be less than forthcoming and transparent when providing these kinds of data, so it’s hard to be sure.

If you assume some staying power to current trends, it’s fair to project rosy prospects for med school admissions 4 years out, and they certainly aren’t bad today, given the strength of the Chicago brand. It’s also fair to project a small bit of reputational separation between Chicago and Duke by that point. But we don’t know that with certainty, and regardless, Duke will remain a top, highly regarded school.

That said (and because people and their interests change over time), you should be considering the total experience of your undergraduate years. Duke and Chicago are generally, and fairly, seen as peer schools but the nature of the undergraduate experience is quite different. Think more about “fit” than any potential (and likely non-significant) advantage one will have over the other for med school placements in four years.
