That slogan needs to die.

I absolutely love UChicago and have been having the time of my life here. Yes, you will have to work very hard - harder than you have ever had to. Yes, there will be assignments and essays that make you cry. Yes, you may have to pull an all-nighter or several. But life at UChicago does not consist solely of studying. I have spent just as many (if not more) weekends traipsing around downtown and partying till 5 as I have studying and writing essays. In fact, the first 2 months of fall quarter, I went downtown almost every weekend. I know many, many people who religiously frequent the frat and apartment party scene. But I also know many people who like to hang out in the dorms, explore new restaurants around Hyde Park or walk up to the Point - sober - and a few who hole themselves up in their rooms. Likewise, parties are well-attended, but the A-Level of the Reg (all-nighter level of the library) is one of the most populated and social areas on campus. It’s a pretty good balance in my opinion.

Some things I’ve done quarter: seen multiple plays, gone to an opera, gone to a concert, gone to the Point, went to the Latke-Hamantash debate, went to Lascivious Ball, went to Fall Formal, attended multiple lectures, shopped and eaten downtown, went to the Obama rally.

So to answer your question, yes, social life is alive and well at UChicago, and there are PLENTY of fun activities to do, involving alcohol or otherwise.
