I was also thinking about the same thing. As IT application manager, I can see how basic programming job can be replaced by AI in the coming future. I would pick Computer Engineering over Computer Science. CSE covers both software and hardware. It opens more door for computer related engineering jobs, such as server, storage, semiconductor, graphic card…Good Luck.
I’m pretty sure it is Univ of Florida (UF), not Univ of Central Florida (UCF)… Of course, that may not change your opinion but just trying to make sure everyone is on the same page.
Thank you. It was a typo. Somehow my mind is tied to UC something Edited my previous post.
The UC system is big, but it hasn’t stretched to Florida yet!
Haha. Totally get it… with the other schools being UCs it is an easy typo.
Here is the CSE curriculum at UCI and there can be considerable difference in CSE degrees with some having just a couple of hardware courses and some looking like EE. He can take a look and decide. To me it looks heavier on the EE side than usual (looking at EECS50 and 70A).

If you are comparing UCSB and UF, I’m not sure that labeling one a party school and the other not is valid. A kid who is going to major in Beer Pong will find that anywhere. And a kid who is serious about studying, getting involved with volunteer work, developing relationships with professors, showing up for a job on time- will also do that anywhere.
Knowing this, I would go UCSB.
A student concerned about this may want to consider whether the anti-DEI backlash in the Florida state government that is affecting the University of Florida may have a meaningful effect on quality of life and topics available in humanities and social studies courses.
The housing situation in UCSB seems to be that starting year 2, most students live off campus in Isla Vista which appears to be the “slummy” party capital of the world (no firsthand info. Just what I gathered from some Reddit posts). Anyone have firsthand info about this? Thanks!
Students love Isla Vista. If you’re worried your kid will be influenced by party people that can happen in Florida too and maybe better being closer to home if he does head in that direction..
Son got off the UCLA waitlist today for Linguistics & CS. He will most likely choose that now among his options.
Congrats!
