UCI's admissions criteria in their own words

(For people who haven’t heard back yet and are worried, here’s what they rank as their criteria and the importance of it, taken from CollegeBoard. Contrary to popular opinion, while UCI DOES value GPA and test scores, they are by no means the only “very important” criteria they weigh. And remember, if you’re denied and feel you shouldn’t have been, you can always appeal your decision.)

Very Important:
Academic GPA
Application Essay
Extracurricular Activities
Level of Applicant’s Interest
Rigor of secondary school record
Standardized Test Scores
Talent/Ability
Volunteer Work
Work Experience

Important:
Character/Personal Qualities
Class Rank

Considered:
First generation college student
Geographical Residence
State Residency

UC’s in general do not take level of interest or class rank into consideration at all. Some of them had over 80k applicants, they couldn’t care less about how many campus tours you went on. The applications don’t even ask for class rank, so that’s out too.

The UC’s themselves put out a list of the 14 criteria used in admissions: http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/freshman/how-applications-reviewed/index.html

Le sigh. UCI put these up there. Each campus weighs things differently. I agree that class rank’s out the window, but this information was taken from Irvine’s admissions counselors’ mouths. Each counselor is different, and each incoming class is different, but the argument being made is that Irvine does take more into account than your GPA or test scores, which is the commonly-held misconception.
