This could very well be the case and that level of pressure eventually becomes part of the culture at Cal.
That’s a vast generalization that I don’t think is fair. I think it has to do with school culture and maybe just the type of person who chooses one school over the other.
@lkg4answers . . .
Re quote 1: There are a a lot of CS majors at UCB, ~700 who graduated last year, and a good number who want to get into Haas. But when social-science majors at UCB complain about grade inflation and competition, that becomes a little disingenuous.
Re quote 2: You’re right. I shouldn’t have stated it in exclusive terms. But guaranteed, UCLA’s premed majors – a lot of them – study really hard too. But most of them have fun also, because effectively no one studies all the time. Wrt to your last sentence, I do believe that the type of student who chooses one or the other campus is for the most part very different, even if people who look at the two from the outside see them as being UC campuses, and therefore that they would have to be very similar.
Thank you so much to everyone for jumping in on this! Ever bit of information and opinion helps!
Correction in my first P, of post #21: “…when social-science majors at UCB complain about grade [deflation] and competition…”
Rather, All the best – I try not to wish anyone just luck, @Rozzienc; there’s no wrong choice between the two.
My son has decided on Berkeley! I am so excited for him and proud of him for taking the time to really research and talk to students and be an active part of the “virtual” admitted students day. Thank YOU so much for your insight as well!! Go Bears!
Yes, go bears, just of the younger variety.
