UCLA Class of 2020 request for supplemental information

That actually makes a lot of sense though.

Under the assumption that these supplemental applications are sent out to borderline students to whom it would be a benefit for them to further explain themselves (a disability in your case), since UCLA is the most selective school, you may be a borderline student for UCLA, but an easy acceptance for the less selective UC’s (can’t say much about Berkeley though, but I haven’t heard of people getting supplements for Cal yet though I might be wrong on that).

I don’t think they automatically send it to anyone who reported a disability - if they don’t need it to accept you, there’s no reason for them to expend extra time or effort asking you to fill out some more information that they don’t need.

@BlackCat16 Yeah I hope that’s the case. I have finished writing my supplemental essay and I put everything I have into that essay so hopefully I get in.

UCB is using the LOR’s instead of the augmented review (supplemental) this year on a trial basis.

@Gumbymom Ah well I got that too. So hopefully that is a good sign.

I think about 20 percent.

So I already posted this in another topic but I’m new to this site (clearly) and I don’t know which boards/discussions/(whatever they’re called) people look at more.

So. I received a supplemental request and I’m not sure why. Don’t get me wrong, I’m an extremely hardworking student but my test scores aren’t anything spectacular and my GPA is extremely low due to a huge huge hardship I faced my junior year and am continuing to face.

Current GPA: 2.8 UW (its rough I know but I have a huge reason behind it)- it was a 3.7 before the hardship I endured

SAT: 1850

ACT: 29

Classes: currently taking both AP and dual enrollment classes as well as almost all honors in the past

Extracurriculars: clarinet in marching band, very involved in church youth group, 2 mission trips to a poor village in Mexico, NHS until I got kicked out due to my hardship, basketball pep band, various concert band ensembles, nannying as a paid job, auditioned for and made it into a state regional band (first freshman clarinetist in school history to do so), auditioned for all state band once on clarinet, piano, guitar

Essays: my personal statement about my illness/hardship (briefly described below) was amazing; not to sound cocky but a few people who read it cried and one said she got chills, which made me feel pretty special. I honestly can’t 100% remember what I wrote for the other essays or what the prompts were, because I applied to so so so so many schools, but I am pretty sure one was about my mission trips in Mexico and the other was about growing up as a musician.

As you can see, I’m nothing spectacular. However as conceited as this sounds I will admit I am very musically inclined and am super into music.

As for my low GPA, I developed a mystery illness that forced me to withdraw from school my junior year. I lost all my credits from that semester except 1 in AP Lang. My local hospital, Phoenix Children’s Hospital, gave up on me since a diagnosis seemed unattainable so I had to fly 3,000 miles and get admitted to Boston Children’s Hospital in Massachusetts, an entire coast away from home. I went through extreme testing and extreme pain, and I got a diagnosis there but only to find out there is no cure. Thus I had to do home/online school the rest of my junior year which was extremely tough; I had trouble just passing my classes and catching up on credits.

I’ve always been an overachiever and academically inclined and never thought my GPA would ever be so low or that I’d be scared about even getting to graduate. Unfortunately, it happened to me and I thought my future was demolished. My top 2 dream schools are USC and UCLA and have been for an extremely long time; I toured them way back when and everything. Even though I know with my GPA I’d have zero hope of being accepted, I applied to the UC schools anyway just because why not?I didn’t even think I’d be considered but now I have this supplemental questionnaire, whoch, not going to lie, made me SO excited to see in my inbox today.

So my question… do they still look at kids with low GPAs like mine or did they send the supplement by mistake? Even if I’m rejected which will most likely be the case, I’m kinda proud that UCLA wants to know more about what I put on my app. I’m expecting rejection but I still want to try my hardest on this supplement, now that I have a small glimmer of hope.

The people who look at applications in the admissions office are aware that sometimes, things happen. If your GPA was a 3.7 before your illness, there is literally nothing anyone could do to have prevented the drop in your GPA. At the same time, they won’t ignore the fact that your GPA IS low, and your SAT/ACT are also low. If you can explain very well on that hardship you had to go through, and I believe there is also a question about whether your grades reflect your academic intellect, I have no doubt that UCLA will seriously consider you.

They didn’t send the supplement by accident. Take the supplemental application seriously.

@oliviad98 adcoms are not robots, but are humans with hearts. That is why there is this thing called holistic review! So do your best and have hopes.

How did you guys respond to the hardship prompt? Did you write about your excuses AND ways you overcame them?

I received a supplemental information request. I am so scared. UCLA is my top choice. Not sure what to make of this.

Applied to Statistics

  • First time freshman
  • 3.04 UC GPA
  • 1460 UC SAT (530 Mathematics, 470 Writing & 460 Reading)
  • 12 AP classes throughout high school, with few honors & accelerated classes
  • Senior year includes: AP Calculus AB, AP Statistics, AP United States Government (1st sem), AP Macroeconomics (2nd sem), AP Art History, Physics Honors, CSU Expository Reading & Writing, and Boys Track & Field (2nd sem).
  • Personal statements were the best part of my uc app, I showed them to my sister and counselor and they both cried...lived in a toxic environment at home and other personal circumstances...I really don't want to talk about it, and several extracurriculars
  • Los Angeles county

As of now I will be heading to San Jose State…the only other three I’m waiting for (that I would rather go to) are San Diego State, UC Los Angeles, & UC Berkeley. Denied from Syracuse EDII and accepted from Humboldt State. Waiting for UC San Diego & UC Davis as well!

Good luck everyone! 1 more month and 5 more days to go.

Please post your decisions here so next class can find out if supplemental review meant increased chances! This sounds like an evolution cycle, but oh well

@uclagal20 sameee

Not sure if anyone still uses this thread, but I was given a chance to submit a supplement. Honestly, I was over writing essays / short responses at this point and I just wrote what came to my mind then submitted it right away.

My stats:

Weighted GPA: 4.54 | Unweighted GPA: 3.7
Ranking: 20 / 659
SAT Score: lol
-> 1710 [CR: 530 | Math: 620 | Writing: 560]
ACT Score: lol
-> 27 [English: 22 | Math:28 | Reading: 32 | Science: 26]

My standarized testing aren’t the best and my AP scores are terrible. I took 5 AP tests sophomore - junior year, I got a 2’s on all of them except for AP Chem (passed). I am currently taking 6 AP classes my senior year and when I self reported my Fall grades, I had A’s & B’s

Honestly, looking at my stats I had 0 hopes for UCLA, so I didn’t bother spending a lot of time on my supplement when I knew I was going to get rejected.

Well, fast forward to March 18th, I logged onto my portal and I found that I was accepted into UCLA.

If you’re curious, I was also accepted to UCR, UCSD, and UCI. Currently waiting on Berkeley for my last UC applied.

Good luck to the class of 2017 when you guys get around to this thread!

WAITLISTED :frowning: OOS.

For future classes.
I received the supplemental and was ACCEPTED to UCLA ! I’m sure only the second question (about disadvantages) applied to me but I also answered the first one about a special skill or talent. It’s an opportunity to impress them.
I have a UC GPA of 3.8 and an SAT of 1580
I have to say my ec’s and volunteer are top notch. My awards section is great. And my essays were among the best that my counselor has read in over 20 years he said.
You can make up bad gpa and sat scores. Never give up.

to future classes:
I received the supplemental with a 2000 sat and 4.1 uc gpa
i reported my senior year grades which were SIGNIFICANTLY better than past years (4.7 UC gpa) and i explained some really rough hardships i went through (my dad passed away, financial struggles, lots of stuff) and how its made me a stronger person…i spent A LOT of time on the essays
aaaaaand i got rejected
so idk seems pretty arbitrary to me
my advice to you is to just do the best you can, but know that their admission decision, or any college’s, is not in any way an indicator of your potential. believe in yourself even if UCLA doesnt!!! (Fight on! >:))
