UCLA Engineering Q&A

Can anyone rank the following courses in difficulty? I’m planning on taking them next quarter:

1) EE 102
2) EE 103
3) EE 10
4) EE 121B

Is that suicide?
Thanks!

I don’t think it would be suicide. I haven’t taken EE 103, but I hear it’s one of the hardest EE classes.

Then I might replace it with Physics 4BL, or maybe CS32…

i haven’t taken ee103 but i’d bet that cs32 is harder/more time consuming…

and ee102>ee10 in terms of difficulty.

haven’t taken ee121b

I took CS31 and thought it was pretty easy, but yea… its time consuming. Thats why I don’t reallly want to take CS32 any time soon.

How’s Math 132? Unlike most EEs, I’m not a huge fan of math.

Math 132 is also hard because it’s all proofs.

Aren’t you afraid of forgetting what you learned in CS 31 by the time you take CS 32 if you keep putting it off? I thought Smallberg warns EEs about making exactly that mistake.

Maybe their GPA distribution is bi-modal .

lol…the common saying is that CS32 is 2 times harder than CS31, and CS33 is 3 times harder than CS32.

i don’t necessarily agree with that because i thought CS32 was the hardest one out of the 30 series…

oh and trust me, a lot of students thought CS31 was easy (since i’m surrounded by CS majors) but CS32 was a lot harder IMO. unless you’re one of those coding freaks/geniuses.

Question about CS131:

The midterm is next week and i was wondering what type of questions will be on it? What’s a good way to study for the midterm? Is reading the book actually helpful? (since he assigns us reading…)

i heard somewhere that there’s an archive of all past midterms and exams from all professors… does anyone know anything about it?

False, now go and punch that person in the face for lying to you!

^ what are the chances that they have engineering tests? I think you’re better off asking people you know for them.

There are so few Engr tests at SAC. You might find lower div classes like CS 31 and CS 32, but forget about the rest of the classes.

“1) EE 102
2) EE 103
3) EE 10
4) EE 121B”

Here’s my ranking…I haven’t taken 121B but it’s notoriously difficult:

EE 103
EE 121B
.
.
.
.
EE 102
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
EE 10

The book is helpful if you’d like a reinforcement of what is done in the lectures. Some people find that helpful, especially if they haven’t had any programming experience before. People with some experience, even if it’s not C++, might get by just with the lectures. Also, some people learn better from reading, some from listening, so do what works for you.

CS 31 midterms aren’t fact memorization. You have to think. Some questions have you trace through code, to figure out what it does or to find a bug. Some questions have you write some code to perform some task. If you did the projects yourself, found and fixed your own bugs, and understand why what you did works, you should do fine on the exams. If you relied heavily on someone else, you’re screwed. Smallberg says doing the projects is studying for the exam, and I think he’s right.

hahaha i’m taking the CS131 midterm, not CS31 :stuck_out_tongue: but thanks for the response anyways

question about internships:

is it even really a possibility to get an internship during my sophomore year for this upcoming summer? (i’m currently sophomore CSE major)

i haven’t really even thought about internships or making a resume, since it seems like I would be pretty much unable to contribute to a company since i know so little about CSE since i’m only a sophomore, is this how most interns feel when trying to get a job?

i dont know how much i should know going into trying to get an internship and getting interviews. also, how would you guys go about writing your resume when you have the very little experience from freshman year plus half of a quarter of sophomore year, it seems like i’d have very little to even put on a resume that would impress recruiters, besides maybe a gpa

and also, i’ve been hearing a lot about junior internships and senior internships, is this referring to the summer after junior year and the summer after senior year? or is the junior internship for the summer after sophomore year and the summer after junior year? because if its the summer of sophomore year i feel like i’m really behind the times on this

Yes, it is possible and I’ve managed it.

You will definitely be able to contribute even if you’ve only taken CS 31/32/33. As long as you can solve problems and understand how to program, you’re in good shape. On your resume, you can also write about related things you may do for fun (suppose you make Firefox extensions or something). Add anything interesting that you did in high school. Once you get to your interview, review what you learned in CS 32; it helps a lot.

I’m your age so I can’t comment on “junior/senior” internships.
