UCLA Engineering Q&A

I am Mechanical Engineering major and I just applied to UCLA and some other UCs as a CC transfer.
My over all GPA is 3.58
I have completed all the required courses but I will not be able to finish Differential Equations and one Physics course.

Is it possible for me to get into UCLA?

Thank you!

Hi so I got a D+ in CS 31 for Fall so I’m retaking it right now. I am a CSE major so I was wondering will I be too far behind to catch up and graduate in 4 years. I passed out of Chem 20A, Eng Comp 3, Math 32A, and 32B and am planning on taking summer session for 3 classes for first year summer.

How difficult is MAE 182A with Wang?

For UCLA CSE
How are the classes/professors? The research/internship opportunities? The workload? The social life? The connections? And if you were given another chance, would you do CSE again?

Does anyone know about the biomedical engineering option within electrical engineering? Is this a good path to go down?

The curriculum has improved to include more design work in recent years, but is still less involved compared to midwest schools.

Hey. So I’m accepted to UCLA as a biological sciences major. If I could slap my younger self back in November, I would, but now I just have to look into changing majors to HSSEAS if I want to do CS at UCLA.
How likely am I to get in from L&S if I do all the requirements?
Or should I just go to UChicago where the program is dinky but they’ll definitely have me…

At the engineering open house this weekend, they said that transferring from L&S to COE isn’t easy. They specifically said that switching to CS is pretty difficult. Nonetheless, if you manage to do well in CS 31 and 32 (A/A-) along with other major prereqs, you’ll probably (not guaranteed due to preference given for COE people who want to switch majors) get in. If you happen to get a bad grade in either course though, you’ll probably screw yourself over completely (if you unconditionally want to do CS) in which case U Chiacgo might be a better choice.

Hi everyone, I just got accepted to UCLA majoring in Mechanical Engineering as transfer student. I’ve got a few questions.

 1. I’ve been doing not well in the last semester in CC, I may end up with few Bs and it will low my gpa. Is that going to affect my admission status?
 2. Is there anyone here had to retake classes in UCLA because those classes don’t match on assist.org?
 3. I’ve been looking at the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering homepage, and I can’t find how many types of concentrations mechanical engineering may have for their students, such as engine, combustion, system, etc. I’d like to know more in detail about it.
 4. Can I take computer science as my minor in UCLA? I really love it, and I think it’ll help me in the future as well.
 5. Just a vague question, how is the student’s life and job/internship opportunities over there for an engineering student because I live in NoCal, so I have no idea how it is? I’d like to hear more about it.

Thanks a lot for any comments :)

Hey guys
Is it mandatory for me to do the UCLA analytical writing exam to enroll in any of the freshman classes? I’m majoring in Electrical Engineering btw.

@cmztreeter007‌ If you have not met the Entry Level Writing requirement, you have to take the analytical writing exam because it’s a requirement of all UC students. But the only freshman class you’ll need it for is English Comp 3.

Will it be possible for me to change my major EE to CSE at orientation?

Hi everyone. I’m a transfer student at Long Beach City College. Im gonna applying this Fall to UCLA as an Electrical Engineering major to transfer Fall 2015.

I was wondering if someone could help me out with a few things:

1) When it comes to the personal statement, what would they be looking for when it comes to engineering majors as transfer students (Besides the obvious like interest in math/sciences, volunteer work, clubs, internships etc)?
2) When does UCLA look at your grades? Is it:
-During the time you Apply in the Fall OR
-At the end of the Fall after you receive your grades ?
3) Do you think a 3.85 ~ 3.88 Cumulative GPA would be considered a competitive GPA for Electrical Engineering transfer?
4) What is student life like at UCLA for engineering majors? Would I be able to get any internships/training?

What is the cost of the Tau Beta Pi initiation fee? The invitation letter I received didn’t specify a price.

How is the Chemical Engineering at UCLA?

How difficult is it to get through the UCLA Engineering program in four years…take into consideration that the student needs to work about 10 hours a week on campus and is also involved in some social activities.

Hi guys, I recently got accepted to UCLA for EE as an undergrad and was wondering how hard it was to maintain around a 3.6-3.7. I’m really hoping to get M.S. in EE at schools like UCLA or Berkeley, and am debating on whether I should go to UCSD (which I think is easier to get a high GPA at) or coming here to UCLA. I would rather have an easier time getting a high GPA at UCSD, even if that means going to a worse school in SD as an undergrad, in order to maximize my chances at coming back here at UCLA for a masters (which apparently admits undergrads with around ~ 3.8 GPA for EE…) Any help would be appreciated!

If you have a 3.5 GPA in EE at UCLA, you are guaranteed admission to the M.S. program for EE. That being said, getting a 3.5 isn’t easy. Won’t be easy at UCSD either.

I’m also wondering about the chemical engineering at UCLA. I’ve heard the chem dept there is brutal and it’s hard to get research and the classes you need. Can anyone comment on the validity of these statements?
