UCSD Transfer 2014 Waitlist?

I had nightmares about UCSD, is this a bad sign?

@CollegeDropout1‌, have you visited both UCLA and UCSD?

You’re still deciding right? I mean, you’re in a situation where you have different majors at each school. (Idk how easily you can switch into CS at UCLA, but yah, as of now at least, you’re deciding which major you choose based on which school you go to.)

@Bhav007 I only visited UCLA. If I go to UCSD, I know that I am going to get homesick. I’m worried how that is going to affect my grades.

@CollegeDropout1‌, Oh ok. What about major? It seems like you want to do CS more than geology, so that will make a difference.

@Bhav007 Yeah, I would prefer to major in computer science, but I can’t do that at UCLA. I don’t know if I will be able to get a job as a software developer with a geology degree. I’m fine with learning how to code on my own, but the question is will anyone hire me?

@bhav007‌
It was very difficult to decide where to go (sounds like I have got accepted by UCSD =.= ), but I did visit Davis and SD. I just found SD fits my personality more and I have more friends there. Although my brother, sister and girlfriend are in NorCal, I can’t just make the decision based on this. I wanna go where I feel happier in the next two years. UCD is kind of boring to me, but if I have to go there, I will be happy too. For the CS ranking, I don’t really consider it the biggest factor. When it comes to CS major, it really depends on how we learn and how we prepare for job interviews. I believe both can offer a good CS programs. I don’t know… now I am like 40% Davis and 60% SD.

@CCCharlie If you think Davis is boring, then you are going to hate SD. UCSD has no social scene, it is absolutely dead. If you don’t care about the rankings, then go to Davis. There is a reason why UCSD has earned the nickname of UC Socially Dead.

@CollegeDropout1‌ , If you’re only aiming of becoming a software developer, you could always pursue a CS minor or change your major to CogSci.
You could also pursue research in Geology and get into Data processing and Scientific computing, that would be a major plus on your resume.
Honestly when you go to college, you always have to sacrifice something. No school is perfect, even if its a dream school. If being close to your SO / family /friends whatever is important to you, you should take it into consideration, but also don’t forget that the workload would often distract you from these thoughts. Really you should concentrate on your goal instead.

Addressing UC Socially Dead:
Well college is what you make out of it, SD itself is an awesome city and Im sure that if @CCCharlie‌, wants to have fun in SD, he definitely could. Being in the middle of nowhere, like Davis limits you to your University, since there’s nothing else around. UCLA is in the middle of Westwood, so there are tons of stuff to do. UCSD might be just a bit isolated, but its nothing to worry about if you’re soon to be 21, or already 21+ and have friends, or a car.

@hilalh Are you saying that I should go to UCSD?

@CCCharlie‌, Davis is a nice place because student there are connected to with the city itself. It’s very integrated = it’s probably easier to get involved in things just because students are everywhere. In terms of activities though, it can be boring I guess, but I think the more traditional college experience would have to go to Davis. There also seems to be a lot of frats and sororities there (http://daviswiki.org/Greek_Life</a>) if you are interested in that.

@collegedropout1 I don’t know you personally so my advice might be off. What do you like better Geology or CS? Studying something that you hate for 2+ years would be horrible. Waste of time and money. If you’re passionate about CS get your priorities straight. LA is only about 130-150 miles away. You could meet up with friends every other weekend and make new friends at SD.

On the other hand,if you’ve been to SD and didn’t like the campus, Or if you have close friends that explained to you with a valid reason why UCSD wouldn’t suit you then go to LA.

The Thing is to be an entrepreneur/ extremely skilled software developer / next Mark Zuckerberg, your major wouldn’t matter at all. You’re gonna need to learn a lot more stuff than taught in class. In addition, as a student who’ve taken upper division CS classes at a top 5 school, I can assure you that what you learn in class is only the tip of the ice berg.

In short
SD for the better major and new experience
LA for being really close with SO and friends and going for something safe

Exactly @cccharlie.
Personally I went to a school with traditional college experience and I didn’t like it at all. I rather be in the big city.

@hilalh‌, which school did you go to?

@Hilalh Thanks! What you said really resonated and helped me. If I decide not to major in CS, do you think it will be difficult to find a job as a software engineer.

Im currently enrolled at UIUC (University of Illinois – Urbana Champaign) in the CS / Math program.
Academically and career-wise the school is excellent. However, I don’t fit the school socially (being an International minority) and although its considered a pretty decent party school, I just can’t find my self in the greek scene. On top of that, the school is at the middle of nowhere (3 hours away from any major city) which prevents me from enjoying any other activity.

Although I had other offers, I decided to opt in solely for the waitlist at UCSD. This decision came mainly for its research opportunities which I am very interested in,the amazing location (both scenic and surrounding city) and the relatively fresh startup scene.

Honestly, academics-wise as long as its top 30-50 you can’t really go wrong, they all teach the same stuff, the opportunities might be slightly different, but its up to the students whether they going to be active outside the class and pursue their interest in the field even further.

As far as I know companies would rather pick an actively contributing top student from a slightly lower-ranked school, rather than a mediocre student from a top school – that is both personal experience and friends.
Ming you, when I say top student, I am not referring to grades exclusively, you have to show your passion. Its very different from community college.

In short, go to a place where you know you can shine.

CS major needs some real time commitment for college and after college, I mean work. Think hard about it because there is no other way. 30-50 hours per class depends on the school.

Weeks are soon going to turn into a month…can I get my acceptance/Rejection already?

Seriously. Ridiculous

Yeah I wanna know so I can figure out where I’m going to live and find a job and everything.

hey I got in off the waitlist on June 10th and SIR-ed after visiting the campus on Friday. I’m having some issues with the housing and fin aid. So on the housing page it says that you had to register by June 1st to qualify (but obviously that was impossible for me). When I talked to the people at the Village and at Admissions they did not mention this deadline and made it seem like I still had time.

So I was wondering if you guys had any issues with this? And if you know if waitlist students get guaranteed housing. I live in so-cal so I really need to figure this out ASAP.

Also the FIN Aid website says that the verification documents deadline was in late may…but again that was impossible to meet.

I haven’t been able to get anyone on the phone and Im freaking out because I cancelled my SIR at Davis so can anyone help me out?
