UF Medical Honors Program (MHP) 2024

Possibly because grad students are considered independent.

Not because grad students are considered independent but because the policies of this specific med school do not require FAFSA from parents of med students.

Typically this is because the school provides no FA except for federal student loans.

Congratulations to you proud parents and your son! Thats an outstanding achievement. I am so happy to find you on this forum and your experience will help us tremendously.

My daughter just finished med school(in our state not Florida) and starting her residency in Boston in June so I am familiar with the overall medical school process, fafsa and independent status but not familiar with in-state residency for OOS medical students in Florida. My daughter had few OOS students in her Med school and they were able to claim in-state residency and pay in-state student tuition after paying one year of OOS tuition.

May be your son can ask someone from the class of 2027 or 2026 who were in the same MHP program and were OOS. I know class of 2026 have several OOS students in the program.

Well if you cannot afford out of state tuition, you should apply in-state where you live.

You can only claim in-state residency if you live in-state and prove residency such as owning a property, paying utilities and have you license/voter ID with proof of residency. Just staying in a dorm at a school does not make you in-state.

This policy very much depends on the state!

Well nothing wrong in exploring options regardless of whether we can afford the OOS tuition or not! It is all about the great opportunity in the program…it will be an honor to be accepted into this program.

Yep and precisely the reason why I am exploring options at UF Med school and whether it will be the same thing in FL or not.

Some of the seniors who are OOS have established residency and granted in-state status so it’s possible as long as you meet their guidelines. I’ll share more details when we find out. Good luck to your son!!

Thanks! This may very well be the case. My son was told during presentation on the interview day that all accepted students in MHP will pay ug tuition for the first year of med school. They will only get their BS degree after completing the first year of med school.

Thank you so much! Thats good to know

Can someone suggest what a prospective MHP applicant should be doing in the freshman and sophomore years to try and get into the program?

Maintain a good overall and science GPA (>3.9), research preferably with publications, demonstrate leadership experience, solid healthcare volunteering (can also be paid), good recommendations highlighting your work ethics and a good resume.

End of An Era! It is sad to see that this accelerated program is no longer offered. The incoming class of 2029 will be the last cohort of the MHP program.
