UIUC Econometrics [$62k] vs USC Econ Math [$100k] [international student; goal: investment banking or quant finance]

His mental model is to do a non-business degree at an undergrad level and do an MBA later.

I found this post interesting. I see no value spending the difference. Save it for the MBA.

Seeing this late, but agree with @Mwfan1921 that quant is unlikely from both.

Thanks. Would moving to CS + Econ at UIUC improve the odds? (Assuming that it’ll happen)

CS at UIUC makes a quant software engineering position more likely, but not a quant trading position. But the odds still remain low because it’s such a small industry.

This is my DS’s experience. He is a CS major in Grainger and will intern at a quant firm as a software engineering this summer. His friend in another science major is interested in trading at quant firms, but was unable land an internship. However, he is interning at a hedge firm this summer. UIUC has a quant club. I was told the club membership is 50/50 software engineering and trading types.

Thanks everyone for you inputs. The kid is going to UIUC.

He also has a direct admit to Kelly with some scholarship, but prefers to defer business education to grad school.

How did he make his decision (what points mattered to him)?

He considered feedback from multiple avenues, including this forum. I also got him inputs from folks in his target industry.
