But listen to this, the strangest thing happened. I got an email from UIUC saying that I was denied admission to the College of Engineering due to missing course requirements. I knew that couldn’t be true, so I called them immediately. After answering a few questions and being put on hold several times, the admissions counsellor told me to ignore the email, and to expect an “official decision” very soon. Sure enough, not even 15 minutes later, I checked my status, which had not changed at all one way or another up to this point, and it said I was admitted to my first choice major.

The emails went like this…

First email:
"Ryan,

Thank you for applying to the University of Illinois. Your application has been reviewed for admission to the College of Engineering. We are unable to offer you admission to Engineering due to missing course requirements and the applicant pool being very competitive. I am writing to see if you are interested in pursuing another major at Illinois. You might be interested in the Technical Systems Management program for which you do meet the transfer requirements. You can learn more about it here: http://provost.illinois.edu/ProgramsOfStudy/2013/fall/programs/undergrad/aces/ag_bio_eng.html#tsm

If so, please let me know by responding directly to this email by Monday April 28 and I will be happy to work with you to help meet your goals."

My response:

Hello ______,

I am curious to know what course requirements I am missing. I thought I had everything.

Their response, after I made the phone call:

"Ryan,

I apologize for the confusion. With the applicant pool being highly competitive this year, the College of Engineering had to make some very difficult decisions.

Upon further review, there are additional spots in Computer Engineering and we will be able to offer you admission. Please log into your myIllini account in order to accept your offer of admission into Computer Engineering.

Please let me know if you have any questions."

This all happened within an hour of my receipt of the first email. Very strange!!
