Two kids pulling the top scholarship. That’s amazing!!

No matter what you decide to do, that’s still amazing. Kudos to your kids and family !!

I really don’t know why this is a serious question and why it garnered so many responses. Choosing anything besides a full ride to UMD would be foolish. A tougher discussion would be if a student did not get merit to either and you are comparing UMD at $50k with Georgetown at $80k.

Bc parents and their kids choose colleges beyond just choosing ā€œthe cheapestā€. Many have choices.

So dismissive. I guess I am foolish - I chose Georgetown full pay vs. Rutgers full ride honors college. Never looked back. I had a brief chance to see if my choice was right for me as I took a class at Rutgers during my time at Georgetown. Totally different. I have had opportunities in my life and career that were definitely attributable to Georgetown. Can’t say I wouldn’t have had great opportunities had I chosen Rutgers but I fully believe I grew and learned in ways at Georgetown that would have been unavailable at Rutgers. Who knows - but I would never deign to call someone else foolish for assessing and evaluating their options.

Many choose for reasons having nothing to do with cost. We had the money to pay and focus solely on best fit and experience and other factors.

Have you considered how many people have forgone free-rides at their state college and chosen to attend a more competitive, more prestigious school. Not just the fools!

Yes. In fact I was one of those people when I went to college (many moons ago). I gave up a full ride to my state school to go to a private school in the Boston area. But since then, college costs have gone up way more than inflation and costs are a much bigger factor now.

We are also talking about an accounting degree. If we were talking about a poli sci degree or something like that then maybe I would change my mind.

I would encourage my kid to go to UMD and give him maybe half the cost of tuition so he can invest in his future in other ways.

I recognize that is MY choice and OPs choice may be different.

p.s.: there is also a decent amount of controversy going on right now at Georgetown. I’m not sure if the adults are running the ship vs the students.

is there an emoji for a bike peddling backwards?

I get it. You feel a certain way. That’s your right. As mentioned, I would not definitely select GT, but it would be a harder decision for me than you. NBD

If you find it please share! I would find it handy to have on hand…

And that makes them right? Prestige is a very strong draw for many, but not always for the right reason.

I would categorize it as the best value, not the cheapest. There is a BIG difference between value and cheapness.

I wonder, what about trying UMD Smith accounting on scholarship; if not happy, then transfer to Georgetown?

There will always be some people willing to pay more for something they perceive to be better. It happens in all consumer categories. Prestige is a greater driver for some people than others. I have met people who would not go to their state school if they were paid to attend. To each his own. No judging from me. Lots of other college selection behaviors that I find more intriguing.

Waitlisted for ivies. Full ride to WVU and partial rides to UMD and UMiami. GU dorms are bad, but Business School is new. GU also makes you live in dorms for 3 years. UMD dorm is brand new and Business School is new. UMiami dorms are medium and Business School is medium. Good professors at all schools. Still undecided…

Some good choices to have.

UMiami dorms are medium to lux high end if you splurge. Then non-existent for some kids next year, but first years have housing. Ask about year 2.
