UMich vs UIUC vs Others for BME

Will be visiting UNC soon, somewhat good to know.

If you have any questions
just ask.

I also think the whole prestige part of selecting a school is due to the fact that my twin sibling is going to MIT. I want to go to a school that’s at least half of that level. I think all 5 of these schools are pretty prestigious.

They said they would match how much MIT costs (which is a lot). So I think all options are open.

UNC wont give you engineering outside the one (bio) - that’s my concern. You can’t do - say - MechE.

Can you get into the Data Science School ? I don’t know. Something to look at.

If not those two areas of interest, are there any others ?

You may think you know what you want now but you’ve already swapped on this thread and at 18 may very well swap again. Maybe you’ll like business. They are not direct admit but that gives you time to decide. Their consulting major has a lot of analytics.

Here’s the thing. For everyone there’s more than one school, in fact many, that you can likely succeed.

So it’s not a - only one of these will work. Maybe oh will or multiple will - so make your best guess and go.

But pedigree and rank should not matter
IMHO. I already showed you by salary the school (not even including these) - your outcome is unlikely to be significantly different.

But your experience may be.

I’m not sure what half of MIT prestige is - but all these are great schools.

And truth is no one knows until they are there - MIT included - what is right. All have bad food, roomies, profs. One just never knows.

It’s easy for me to tell you not to compare. Your parents should be proud of you regardless.

But take the time and visit.

I feel the ranking is important to understand the people that you are going to meet at the school. I know that higher ranked schools will obviously have some amazing undergraduate students that will be doing amazing things when it’s compared to something lower ranked. Yeah the prestige part also ties somewhat into my parent’s views of things and how I need to be as good as my sibling.

My main concern with UNC is just how few OOS students there might be. Last year’s class had a ratio of 1 OOS to 4 in-state. I’m just afraid that in-state kids will already have their friend circles and communities at UNC.

We are OOS. I can answer any questions you may have.

On average yes. In engineering not necessarily.

Purdue is tops, as an example, for engineering. But outside of it and a few other majors, it’s not as hard an in. UIUC is similar in that regard.

UNC is much easier in state as will be UMich.

Case will be well rounded but its kids that didn’t get into MIT. Theur yield is extremely low.

But you could go to U Iowa and you’d be floored at the amount of smart kids.

You are truly over thinking it.

Look at where your family works. What colleges did their coworkers go to ?

We have a Harvard Law working for Fairleigh Dickinson. Vandy working for W Georgia.

On my street/neighborhood with million dollar houses is Ms State, Lipscomb, Lee, Middle Tn State, Auburn, Cornell, Long Beach State, Arizona State, etc.

You’re making assumptions, perhaps in part based on the sibling, that just aren’t reflective of reality.

I hope you can visit all - especially Case which is most different.

Good luck.

I noticed right away. A realtor showed me a house with one too. Everyone is different. They give me the creeps :). But I’m not OP.

@chtaze Just to give you an idea

Originally DD was looking to do Nutrition major as premed (HS). Then it moved to Psychology by application round. She got into BSDO program with direct access to medical program. That program required natural science major and Psychology was not allowed. So she selected Neuroscience and declared it. She tried Neuro and had to drop from it since department was understaffed and she did not like choices there. Now she is Chem major and loving it
She is still premed

I’m pretty sure Umich engineering is the highest ranked on the list and has the lowest acceptance rate. I do want to be surrounded by high achieving peers so that we can collaborate on projects and clubs outside of school. For example I’ve been in robotics for the past few years and the people on my team are the smartest in my area. I want an environment similar to that.

You will have very accomplished students at all of these schools.

I’ve heard that UNC has a beautiful campus :). There is obviously negatives at every college.

UNC is very pretty, but there are parts that need a little work (my opinion).

Are any of these schools notoriously known for grade deflation? I know I can definitely handle college level classes but I don’t want too much competition that all I do the whole day is school work to maintain my GPA.

NC is a big state with lots of major and smaller metro areas. It’s capped at 18% OOS by law.

UIUC has a smaller % OOS and really Chicago is the main area.

I tend to think concerns of friend groups are overblown. These states have millions of people.

But yes the other three have larger OOS populations.

If you’re looking for overall student quality vs the quality in the major, then go Michigan. If your folks can pay $175k a year then it’s tops of the 5. Or Case - also high ACTs (listed below) and a lower.l- ish acceptance rate. It’s likely a MIT rejection landing spot.

MIT 34-36

Michigan 31-34, 18% admission

UIUC 30-34, 42%

UNC 28-34, 15.5% admission

Purdue 27-34, 50% admission

CWRU 32-35, 28% admit

I think it’s a terrible way to pick a school but you have to do what’s best for you.

Good luck.

Anyone speak to this question? Any response is appreciated.

That’s going to be pretty much every major flagship. Sorry to say. Those who survive engineering and as a major nationally it has a 50% drop rate - those who stay will all be smart.

Not all will do clubs or not all clubs are the same. Some will work on cars. Some in other areas. Some completely unrelated like sailing.

You will be surrounded by brilliance at all these schools but I would eliminate UNC simply due to its lack of engineering.

You seem to think there’s a clear rank or leader. There is in USNews which is there to sell magazines. That’s not life.

Sounds like you might enjoy the maker space at Case. The below text is a description.

Cleveland has its own role to play in the university-based innovation game. Think[box] at Case Western Reserve University is one of the largest college innovation centers in the world. The seven-story, 50,000-square-foot complex offers top-line technology and equipment including 3D printers, laser cutters, embroidery machines and more.

Even Think[box]’s layout is meant to facilitate idea generation, says Michael Goldberg, executive director of Case Western’s Veale Institute for Entrepreneurship on the innovation facility’s top floor.

The center is broken up into seven floors, with participants advancing upward in the order of brainstorming, physical prototyping and company creation. Think[box] has also been the launching pad for any number of student-led spinoffs. Cleveland-based startup CLEANR, which operates from the center, develops filtration technology to keep plastic microfibers from being discharged into sewer systems during the laundry cycle.

Spearheaded by a trio of Case Western students, the company is furthering the technology’s reach via a new partnership with a German mesh filtration manufacturer. For Goldberg, the team-up is emblematic of the university’s high-powered entrepreneurial focus – one further buoyed by its standing as an R1-designated institution.

“We have tours where students are visiting Think[box] and are impressed by what they see,” says Goldberg. “The university grew facilities like this so students could innovate and try new things.”

Yes I got a p.s. message from my acceptance letter saying this: “P.S. I think that you would love Sears think[box], the makerspace at Case Western Reserve!” Will probably be unable to tour though and engineering isn’t highly renowned so probably not one of my top choices.
