"umm" and "uhh"

vball, you mean no one pulls out a pen and paper to tally them up?!

I like, totally don’t even, um, get this thread. Like, y’know?
Just like, wow.
Like.

But I kinda agree. If umms and uhhs are uttered every few seconds, it can be distracting. A few times isn’t bad, though. I personally work on not saying “you know” frequently. :D

I prefer this version:

Once, there was this kid who
Took a trip to Singapore and brought along his spray paint
And when he finally came back
He had cane marks all over his bottom
He said that it was from when
The warden whacked it so hard

Mmm mmm mmm mmm, mmm mmm mmm mmm

I agree. It’s hard to watch some TV with my Grammar-Police mother; interviews and other extemporaneous situations. She not only picks out every little flaw, but must then discuss it with me. We both end up missing the point the speaker is making. Drives me nuts.

Sometimes American-born pro athletes’ speech troubles me.
I’m not perfect to be sure, but they are almost always grads of 4 yr colleges. Disappointing to see how throwing a football(for example) is viewed as so much more important than speaking English.

Yes, exactly. If you really care, then speak to the person in private afterwards. But this ostentatious let-me-pull-out-my-paper-and-mark-it-down-each-time isn’t terribly impressive. I think much less of someone who would deliberately embarrass another person publicly than I would of the umm-utterer, who is likely trying his best. I can’t think of any workplace where your behavior would be acceptable, unless you were actually a speech coach being hired to coach employees on public speaking.

Since OP hasn’t piped in, maybe we have pulled out our pen and paper and made it obvious what we think.

I had a professor in college who would say “alright” literally hundreds of times in a class period. Yes, I had classmates who would count it. I didn’t because I’d get bored doing so!

From Post #6:

That’s not a type of speaking I’m familiar with.

Good eye. oops.

omg yallz iz bein too picky. lik yall eliminate colleges coz the tour guide said ‘um’?? wow damn. but like whatever i aint no parent so yeah…
