Yes…I see besides academics they also look at leadership, community service, extracurricular activities etc. That is also true for many other competitive majors- public health etc.
Thanks a lot … please tell me more about few such clubs
At orientation there is a huge presentation of clubs, with tables set up and opportunities to learn. I assume that this still happens, but you can ask.
There is another big presentation of clubs when the semester begins.
There is also no shortage of community service.
Here is a brief listing of clubs that are open to undergrads: business tech club, consulting club, marketing club, finance society. There are more.
Thanks all for your inputs. We read all these over and over again. Much appreciated. UNC is in and we will visit soon. Rutgers HC is in for sheer proximity and strongest fall back. Haven’t seen much thoughts from others on Northeastern but surely based on few thoughts above that is 3rd in order. We will drop UMD CS from the last lap. We will also start declining other schools shortly.
Have you visited Northeastern, or plan to? It’s a great school for the right student. It is also very, very different than UNC.
Congrats on Rutgers HC. From what I understand that is a huge accomplishment and a very difficult acceptance.
Thank you … yes he put in a lot of focused effort to reach this runway. We will visit Northeastern too.
My D23 was accepted at UNC last year and we visited twice. She was interested in applying for business and was told during the info session that students apply first semester of soph year and if they get rejected, they can apply a second time. You may want to confirm that is still the process.
She loved Chapel Hill and it was was one of her top choices. This may not be an issue for your son, but the high percentage of North Carolina students, @ 80 percent, gave my daughter pause. (She wanted a more diverse study body.)
Travel Tip–bring comfortable walking shoes. We stayed at the Carolina Inn and walked everywhere. We explored beyond the busy strip of Franklin Street to the adjacent charming town of Carrboro, which had shops, breweries, farmers market, restaurants.
(Napoli pizza was fantastic!)
UNC places well into top consulting firms ( from several different majors), if that industry is of interest. The others not so much.
Thanks a lot for good info.
That was an issue for my OOS daughter initially, however once she adjusted she found herself with friends from all over the country.
Also keep in mind that there will be students from all over the state.
In the event some posters are late to this thread and playing catch-up, please do not continue any of the off-topic conversations and debate from yesterday. If you wish to discuss the classifications of college towns or suburbs, take it to PM or another thread. This is not a suggestion and such posts will be deleted. Thanks for your understanding.
If I understand correctly, UNC-CH has the best placement into “elite” jobs in investment banking and management consulting, but is also the riskiest in terms of needing to go through competitive secondary admission to the CS and business majors. The questions are:
- How interested is the student in those “elite” jobs?
- Are there non-competitive majors at UNC-CH that the student would be interested in if denied CS and business in secondary admission?
Thanks for your feedback. Yes his wish is to get into Biz else he is okay with Info Science he got through assured admission. However the challenge is comparing that with Rutgers HC CS that he has assured admission in from a total college experience & career outcomes perspective. Thrown into this mix is Northeastern CS& Biz dual he got in (plus Honors College and Housing). His long term career goal is do MBA after few years of working and earning for that MBA. Complicating this thought process is two Waitlists he’s waiting on (T-5 Engg & CS) which we sort of discounted that he wont get them… else it gets too much to think about!
Thanks for your input.
Agreed. (And I wouldn’t waste time visiting.)
What is your state of residence? (CS is a pretty common major, and your state flagship may be the best value of all, unless Biz is a real possibility.)
Personally, I’d focus on Northeastern and Rutgers. And for a few dollars more (than Carolina), I’d go private.
full disclosure: not a fan of paying OOS rates for a public, unless its a really special program.
Not assured, but oos students are top notch, and by qualification alone very likely to be successful enough to be admitted into those schools. A student should worry more about that if they are in state and felt lucky to get in.
UNC is a top-notch program and the cost for oos is one of the most reasonable around, so those two things make it different.
But are “elite” investment banking jobs (which appear to be preferentially recruited at UNC-CH versus the other schools, according to @Catcherinthetoast ) his desired jobs? If not, then is it worth the uncertainly of competitive secondary admission to his desired majors to attend UNC-CH over the other schools?
I’m well aware of UNC --my niece is a proud grad – but still doesn’t change my pov. The largest feeder to AAPL is nearby San Jose State, not Cal and not Stanford. Being a Comp Sci major from Carolina or Northeastern is not gonna make a difference in employment opportunities.
OTOH, if “top-notch” Flagler was a direct admit – which is it not – then that woudl be a different analysis.
Assuming that OP will be at the xx % of teh Carolina class to transfer into Flagler is foolish, IMO.
Thank you for your point of view.
If it were KF direct this thread wouldn’t have been on lol . That said student is ready to compromise with IS which is his assured major in case he can’t make it to KF. So at that point t worst case scenario is to compare UNC IS with Rutgers CS. In IT boom tide all boats rise but this year even Northeastern Co-ops were lackluster and a lot of Rutgers CS sophomore/juniors couldn’t get internships. In this situation, UNC with better opportunities for non Coding jobs is potentially better than Northeastern.
