UNC Chapel Hill [$60k, undeclared] or Northeastern HC [$65k, CS & business] or Rutgers HC [$40k, CS] or Maryland [$60k, CS]

Thanks a lot!!! Finally found another parent with similar predicament on Rutgers HC CS Vs others. So through this forum, we did come to conclusion that if our child wants to persue CS, it will be Rutgers HC. If its still undecided /leaning towards business then it will be UNC Chapel Hill. That said, the visits we have planned to Chapel Hill and other Waiting lists we are waiting on will potentially change final decision.

You will learn a lot when you go to CH - you may not even like it. Or they might love it.

They can do business or CS - so the school shouldn’t be limiting in that sense. Well they may not be able to do business at CH.

Really, to me, it’s which is affordable and which is preferred. I don’t see a “major” rationale here - i.e. you can do most anything in business (if that’s the route) from Rutgers, not much differently IMHO than UNC. I know others may disagree.

Some of the UNC dorms can be kind of ugly, imo. My daughter didn’t care about that. She chose the dorm that had the best location (for her) and didn’t pay attention.

One non academic difference that stands out to me between UNC and Rutgers is the activity level on campus. UNCs campus is usually very busy
even on the weekend. Rutgers campus is much quieter. This can be a plus or a minus depending on the student.

I don’t think Rutgers is very quiet, we live 40 minutes away, our daughter rarely came home, and my kids have/had tons of friends there who stayed (and my kids would visit if home on breaks).

On a lighter note - commuting is in NJ blood  - we commute for work, we commute for fun and Turnpike/NJTransit are our nervous system so no wonder weekends kids “commute away” lol

I am not suggesting that the kids come home on the weekends- that is not what I meant. They stay on the weekend.

I mean that there is a lot of activity at UNC on the campus
compared to Rutgers. Families walking, lots of people outside, etc. The UNC campus is always very busy on a typical Saturday. We don’t see that level of activity at Rutgers. I have a student there- it’s a great school.

I seem to have unintentionally started something. Rutgers is a great school- my kid is there on the NB campus.

Thanks for clarifying, I’ve seen others refer to it as a suitcase school, which I disagree with (and NJ seems to have several).

Very True. Just back from visiting UNC Chapel Hill. Very different than Rutgers HC environment and vibe. Lot of school spirit, motivated admission ambassadors carefully crafted tour. Overall UNC CH is more like a Private than a Public!. Nice!. NC state students are lucky!

Size wise pretty small compared to Gigantic Rutgers  so you get to see students everywhere. But no need to deal with buses!

It possibly comes down to - is it worth more than twice COA for more prestige, more fun and better learning experience?(the last part seems evident). Granted - the question remains - what is worth for you might not be for me :)
and that is key to this puzzle!!!

It really depends on how your son feels about the possibility of not getting into the business school. Rutgers HC is impressive.

And yes, I agree that the overall vibe of these 2 schools is very different.

This is very important - but I’m not sure you can truly state this. It will be different for every kid at different schools.

Until one is there and experiencing - it’s too hard to know. You can make an assumption, of course, but one just can’t know for sure. But it’s very important - because in many ways it’s value for the money - moreso than the prestige angle.

UNC academics is top notch, but is there any reason to believe that Rutgers HC will not be?

UNC is fun - of course this depends on your definition of fun, but there is plenty to do even if you are not into sports. There is lots of activity on campus all the time etc (that is the point I was making in one of my prior posts). You are absolutely right about ambassadors - they do an excellent job. Clubs are also well attended.

There is a lot to think about. Good luck!

Well - its an intuition and not a certainty. But from student outcomes that UNC publishes this is guess we made that learning experience is better in UNC.

The academic experience at UNC is outstanding. How would you describe the academic experience at Rutgers HC?

CC parents and Fam! Thanks a bunch for all your help and wisdom. Student committed to UNC Chapel hill. This was done after detailed discussions, research, visits and alumni discussions. Final say came in after school counselor weighed in.

We still don’t know if this “would be” the right thing. Time will tell!

Your son had/has many great options and I am sure he would succeed at all of them.

As long as he is excited and happy about UNC, it’s all good! Congrats and welcome to Carolina!

Congrats! I think my son is headed there in the fall too (apparently, he wants to wait until deadline to commit :cold_sweat:)

Wishing your son the best of luck. It seems like he really took a lot of things under consideration and made a well educated difficult decision even if it wasn’t where you were leaning towards.

You should be very proud of how thorough he was. Hope both our boys have a great experience!
