I had totally forgotten that post! You’re right. That could have been excerpted from the Oregon brochure!
It seems that she will have money left in her 529 if she attends Oregon- the only question right now is the amount. Are you able to use that money for grad school? You don’t have to answer, but it’s something to think about …and a nice problem to have.
I think there are a very small number of schools that are worth full pay while walking away from another quality school offering a free ride. UNC is incredible, but for me, it isn’t on that list.
My daughter had an unbelievable experience at UNC and we have no regrets about turning down large scholarships.
But…in this student’s case…she is comparing UNC to the Stamps possibility … at her SECOND choice school. If she gets this award she will be a Stamps scholar at her #2 pick! That could be hard to pass up, as this is definitely not a school that she has doubts about (at least not now).
She still has a $30,000 scholarship if she doesn’t get Stamps, which means she will have some money left over for grad school if she attends Oregon.
However…this is also a family that has the money saved and seems willing to spend it ……if it’s the right school.
I hope she gets Stamps and they get to visit (or revisit) both, and I hope the decision becomes clear….whatever it is.
may I ask which Stamps school did your friend’s son pick over harvard? Stamps has 37+ partner schools
Thank you for posting this question as I found the replies very helpful. I have a son at Chapel Hill (soph currently, honors college) and he absolutely loves it and as a parent I love the community and the incredible opportunities it provides. I believe that Stamps at UO means acceptance at the Clark honors college. So the honors program is another consideration. At UNC it’s a bit harder to get the classes/times you want the first couple of years, unless you are in honors college, which gives you reg priority (not to mention the great advising).
Best of luck to your daughter with the final step of the process and huge congrats to her for both of these amazing achievements! I’m sure you’ve seen the UNS thread, getting in fr OOS this year is near impossible, the EA application had >10% increase (someone said 15%, but not sure where they got the data)
I will message you
I’d love to know too if you wouldn’t mind sending a private message.
Thanks for your message! We feel very fortunate to be in this position.
did you find out about the results?
Last week we learned that she has been awarded the Stamps scholarship at Oregon. We are so proud of her and the work she put in to be recognized this way. Now there is a difficult and exciting decision to be made!
Congrats! Really really hard to turn that one down!
such wonderful news, congrats to your d and also to you for raising her as a scholar!
Fabulous news about the Stamps!
