With UNC she gets priority registration, dedicated advising team (not large, but dedicated), exclusive networking portal for jobs and internships, some events through the year, preferential study abroad opportunities. Feedback from current students are mixed in terms of what these opportunities mean in terms of outcomes/value.
Thereās an active UNC subreddit that might be able to give more advice on what those opportunities mean. I think the priority registration could be really helpful. The other stuff sounds good too.
Priority registration sounds good and I would find out more. As a frame of reference, UNC sets aside classes at orientation so that those with later dates still get classes. My daughter entered her first year with second semester sophomore status and had no problem getting her classes for the fall or spring of her first year (she had seniority over some). There were other students who found the process stressful, although it eventually worked out. Priority registration sounds very helpful.
I would ask for details about dedicated advising. What does that mean, exactly? My daughter did not have any issues getting an appointment when she wanted one. I would ask about any advantages.
Exclusive networking, internships, jobs: I would ask what they mean by this and what the advantages are. As a frame of reference- internships and research positions are plentiful and really only require asking. There is no shortage for those who want. My daughter had internships and research positions all 4 yearsā¦just by asking. What advantages will your student have when it comes to jobs? My daughter wanted to work before heading back to grad school and was employed by junior year. She received an unprompted email as a junior offering her an interview for a specific gap year program. She also had a few professors reach out to her with job opportunities.
Special events: I would ask what this means as it relates to your major, and how this differs from the regular events that take place on campus.
Preferential study abroad opportunities: I would ask what this means. My daughter studied abroad and the process was flawless. What advantages and opportunities would you get? I would be curious to know.
In summary: UNC is already an amazing school. I would ask how the things they are offering you are different than the norm (sounds like there should be at least a few differences). Some of the students in honors (for example) do not feel that they have many advantages ā¦and kind of shrug their shoulders when asked.
What did your daughter decide?
Decided to go to UNC.
Congrats! Go Heels!!
