fyi - I had my d take a couple of folding chairs with her (the canvas ones in the bag with drawstring). She never used them for 2 years, and refused to take them the 3rd year.

^ I should clarify, shipping is free if over $25 and it is sold by Amazon and not one of the other companies that sells on Amazon

I’ve done t-shirts from the college bookstore where that student is attending. I’ve also done the 20.11 thing too. I really like the idea of the folding chair. My d1 has about 20 parties to attend and getting something for each one seems like so much. The chair will be awesome.

I just bought a desk lamp for a boy- and also got a fleece blanket with school’s name on it for another -better friend=More $$

^^^avoid halogen lamps, as they are often outlawed due to fire risks.

^Oops- meant desk fan not lamp-

I like the little tools that are combination hammer/screwdriver set and a big roll of duct tape in the school color. And now the tape comes in zebra, leopard, & camo, too! Add a kit of safety pins and other last minute go-to survival. Fill in with iTunes card.

There are never enough electrical outlets in dorm rooms. I often give something like this.
[GE Outlet Surge Protector - Bed Bath & Beyond](http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?SKU=15851074)

If you’re buying a surge protector for use with a computer, be sure to get one rated high enough for that kind of equipment. And tape the original receipt to the bottom of it. I learned the hard way that the warranty that covers damage to your equipment is only good if you have the right one and have the receipt. When lightening struck my house and fried my computer I was out of luck.

Good point, Puzzled. However, in my experince, the high-rated surge protectors can’t be had for the price range specified in the OP.

what would be a good gift under $20 for graduation party for a girl?

Our experience last year, and one that was affirmed multiple times with children older than my son, is that most kids don’t give presents to each other.

I wasn’t totally convinced, so I purchased a stack of 15 dollar I tunes cards and some greeting cards to put them in. He said he was often one of only a few kids who brought gifts.

" How about the book THE NAKED ROOMATE, with personal note written in the front cover. My S received a copy & it has a lot of great advice–perfect summer reading for the college bound."

Has anyone else read the book? Just wondered if it is good.

If kid is taking a guitar to college - as many do - and doesn’t have a guitar stand, I just bought a pair (yes, 2!) for $15 from Music123. They have nice inexpensive guitar straps too.

Yeah, if they play guitar you can get them a lot of things related to that… I tend to buy from musiciansfriend.com. If you buy from them you have to make sure your shipping address is the same as your billing address on your credit card or they won’t ship to you. I guess to protect against fraud. Ran into that in college when I was trying to have three guitars shipped to me at school.

One of D’s friends made cute, colorful luggage tags and everyone loved them.

My D and I just went shopping for a graduation gift for my boss’ daughter. As we wandered through Bed, Bath & Beyond, my D tried to remember gifts she received 6 years ago that were useful. The only gift that she really used was a spa wrap that a friend gave her which had her name embroidered on it. I found one for $19.99 at BB&B. Daughter used it 3 years, them left it hanging on the peg behind her bathroom door when she moved out after junior year and never saw it again. It’s just a white, terry cloth “towel” that is elasticized at the top with a velcro fastener.

Went thru my son’s school online store and found some gift ideas:
Stainless steel water bottle with or w/o school logo and the one comes with loop cap that hooks karabiner. It can then attach to a backpack or bike.
Desktop stuff: organizer, pencil holder, etc
Coffee mug with school logo and then filled with hot choc packets
