2. Instead of asking which University do they prefer students from, ask: which universities do they interview at? There are two main types of schools they interview at. The first are universities that have programs that focus on petroleum geology. The second are universities with geology programs that are top ranked - regardless of emphasis of petroleum geology. Some lesser known schools are also interview sites, but not all companies visit them.</p>

<p>All of the supermajors and most of the majors will interview at big state schools that have programs catered to petroleum geology. These would include Texas A&M, UT Austin, the University of Houston, LSU and Texas Tech. These would also be the best schools in the U.S. for a M.S. in petroleum geology.</p>

<p>All of the supermajors will interview at top ranked geology graduate programs, which include: Penn State, UC Berkeley, Stanford, Wisconsin, Caltech, Princeton, the University of Arizona and several others. These programs are hard to get into, which is why oil companies interview there. They expect students in these programs to be able to think outside the box, be extremely adept at geology, and able to solve complex problems.</p>

<p>I’d say I know more oil industry geologists from Texas A&M than any other school. But, I know a lot of geologists that work in the industry, and the vast majority never went to a petroleum geology school. I know at least 10 people who went to the Indiana University, for example. Indiana University does not have any faculty that specialize in petroleum geology.
