Understanding the net price calculator

The new Pell award maximum was just announced a week ago, but the new schedule has not been released. It’s possible the NPC is in a state of flux, with new info ready to be loaded soon. Not saying that is for-sure, but it’s a possibility. The student can call the school to ask what is going on.

Another possibility: The 2017-2018 EFC formula differs from the 2016-2017 formula. That can make a Pell EFC become a non-Pell EFC.

Thanks for the correction. I didn’t realize the new Pell formula just rolled out. You would think they would decide that during the summer.

The change to early FAFSA filing really put everyone in a bind, from Congress (who sets the Pell amounts) to Federal Student Aid (who sets up the federal processing systems) to schools (who have to hurry to get ready to take FAFSAs months earlier than usual, plus push their boards to set costs and budgets months earlier than usual - not to mention all the messaging required due to the change). Frankly, I am amazed that it has gone as smoothly as it has so far (not that there haven’t been bumps).

@MichellexAlyssa did you file your FAFSA for 2017/18 already? What was your EFC?

@kelsmom, if the assets are higher then EFC can be higher from 2016/17 to 2017/18 FAFSA but otherwise wouldn’t EFC be lower because same 2015 income is used but income protection amount went up?

Our EFC went down by $62 using same income but new EFC formula.
