Unexplained weight loss

Just let us know what happens. I’m one of those who had a big unexplained weight loss (35 pounds) that turned out to be diabetes. It was nice to lose the weight, but…

Hugs to you!

Thyroid is on the list of tests he’s running. Im not aware of any control issues but I get where you are coming from missypie. For now I’m just going to enjoy the new size 7 clothes and relax. Will continue to monitor however…Never thought this would be a concern :)

I unexpectedly lost 20 pounds last fall - no appetite and sort of run down. Turned out I had pretty bad anemia caused by an increase in a medication I take. My doctor reduced the med, I got my appetite and, unfortunately, my weight back! So, don’t buy too many size 7 clothes just yet!

This happened to my brother–come to find out, he had a tape worm! I’m sure your Dr. already ruled that out but I have just never known anyone else who has actually had one.

mtnmomma, what a disturbing thought-yuck! I’m reading a novel about living in the jungle and it talks about tapeworms and fungal infections and leeches…where leeches should never be!

really, really wishing I hadn’t just read that last post!

This has been one of my nightmares since I took a parasitology class in college…

Three of us from work were sharing a cab on the way to a seminar bright and early one morning. The cab driver was giving us his tale of extended hospitalization, near death, great weight loss, etc etc etc…and yes, it was a tape worm. JEEZ, talk about WAY too much information from a total stranger!!!

Well I was craving a snack till I read the last few posts. Thanks for helping me stick to my diet!

Of all of the movies I’ve seen in my life, one of the two grossest was a film in high school biology about human parasites.

Have you ever seen the TV show Monsters Within Us? It is all about parasites and extreme cases. I watched it once or twice. it was gross and fascinating at the same time.

sistersunnie, in all likelihood it’s either a readily treatable thyroid problem or nothing that matters. Forget the tapeworm hypothesis.

On the other hand, my grandmother’s brother had a tapeworm once. After it found its way to the outside world through the expected route, he kept it in a jar of formaldehyde.

So one morning I pick up the phone (I guess this should be under the “phone calls you don’t want to receive” thread) and my son informs me that he thinks he has worms. I will not go into details. He did not. You know how med school students think they have everything? He’s starting early (on pre-med track). However, at one jaw-dropping point in the conversation after I told him to run-not-walk to the health center, he mused on how if he had them he might keep them as he would like to drop a few pounds. There are some moments in parenthood, where you just don’t even know where to begin or where you went wrong.

A team mate of my S’s in HS had worms of some sort. He kept losing weight, and looked terrible. He was a track athlete, and his performances went downhill and downhill. Everyone was very worried about him. His doctor tested him for everything under the sun, and strongly considered a number of really seriously disorders. Finally, he was retested for parasites, and there they were! Apparently they had been at a comparatively non-detectable stage in their life cycle when they looked earlier. His mother told me that everyone said they had never been so happy to hear that someone had worms! Several months later, I bumped into him and he was flourishing. Must have put on at least 20 lbs.

I am getting the feeling that WHATEVER is causing sistersunnie’s weight loss it will be better than the idea of worms.

sistersunnie, any test results back yet? Curious minds want to know.

No nothing to report.

It’s been a while.

All tests normal. Go figure.

I’m glad for that, but what do you do now?
