<p>How can you people who describe yourselves as Indian, Asian, or even Jewish say your “unhooked”? If schools truly are trying to build a class of all kinds of people, it seems to me anything other than Caucasian American is a hook.</p>

Asias are overrepresented in higher education, and are thus categorized as ORM (“overrepresented minority”). A lot of college counselors will subtract some points from your “academic index” if you are from one of these groups known as ORM because they know higher standards are applied to you during the admissions process.</p>

<p>You are totally clueless, eh? At MANY top universities, being Indian, Asian or Jewish is of no benefit and can even be a disadvantage. At places like Stanford or Penn, Jews and Asians combined make up close to 50% of the student population, if not more (and yeah, most often in North America Jewish=Caucasian). </p>
<p>Those three groups are over-represented minorities. Admissions officers expect MORE from them than of URMs (Native Americans, blacks, etc…) or even some caucasians.</p>

<p>Son was accepted this spring by Stanford (one hook–sibling there) and by Duke (no hook). Also was accepted by the other three schools he applied to.</p>
