University of Florida Class of 2028 Official Thread

Agree with what you said about fit. And some of the weird rejections from above could be a result of this. The college might know that they would not be a good fit with the student for whatever reason.

“I agree that “fit” is an overlooked or minimized factor in college selection.”

Truer words my friend! There is a fixation on rankings and perceived “prestige” that clouds the vision of so many great kids. Find the place you feel most comfortable spending the next 4+ years of your life and the successful career and lifelong friendships will follow
regardless of whether you school is 5 to 10 places above or below a competitor in some flawed ranking.

We will strongly be considering UGA. Didn’t want to have to leave the state, but it’s a strong possibility now. We will need to visit Athens in the next week or two. Any advice would be great!

Only for 5 North Carolina Universities. UNC-CH is still at an 18% cap for OOS.

I don’t have advice but I will try to offer encouragement. Money aside, bc that’s a huge factor and I’m sorry you can’t take advantage of UF pricing. That sucks. My D24 toured many campuses and chose not to apply to UF and did apply to UGA (oos both). She was accepted to UGA, but will not attend as she has a couple of other acceptances she prefers. That said, UGA campus is beautiful and Athens is a MUCH better college town than Gainesville. The campus culture is great and there’s plenty of kids from all over and it’s diverse enough for all kids to find their people. I think you will be really impressed. Money aside, again, it a great place so I hope you and your child enjoy your visit. I would prefer it over UF for my kid!

Do you think it would be as easy of a transition for a sophomore transfer from OOS? Waitlisted too, and really considering this option.

UF doesn’t admit sophomore transfers. Only beginning freshman and juniors.

Congratulations!!! to all the new Gators Class of 2028
Welcome to the Gator Nation!!!
Going thru this twice in the last 4 years I know how stressful it is.

How did you like Auburn?

I might be wrong but I think I heard that they don’t have the same quotas and rules for OOS for transfers.

OOS accepted with Honors! We are thrilled and had no idea just how challenging admissions are at UF until reading this thread. UW 4.0 Weighted 5.0, 34 ACT, and the Community service hours leadership and work others on this thread have also invested. Daughter is interested in Business. We were lucky enough to be able to visit Indiana University, U Miami, UF, and UGA in one visit and liked them all with the exception of UF’s large student body looking like grown adults, likely graduate students. We are waiting on UC Berkeley and UCLA both of which are unlikely admits given the competition and large International applicant pool. U Miami is out b/c of the money. My question is whether it’s more important to look at the Undergraduate Business programs and job placement rather than overall ranking of the school if in fact my daughter wants to be out in 4 years making money and paying off her large student loan debt rather than going immediately for a Masters or MBA.

If your kid is anything like mine, they will love it. Athens is fun and action packed yet warm and friendly. Its right next to Campus. Did a tour with my daughter of Indiana, Miami, UF, and UGA. UGA was her favorite campus and Athens her favorite town by far.

Quite late but:
Admitted in-state via PACE (probably because of my major) → nutritional sciences

UW: 3.77
Weighted: 4.98
16 AP classes, passed all exams (excluding senior year because haven’t taken yet), 8 DE Classes
33 superscore ACT, 31 raw

Surgical internship for 40 hours
Chorus sectional leader for 3 years
Public theater actor for 2 years
Coach experience at YiMO esports conglomerate for 1.5 years
220 hours CS
100 hours work experience

I truly believe my ECs and essays helped me get in! Gracious for my opportunity at UF in-campus after I finish one year of PACE.

As someone who works at another university (which has a ranked business school), I encourage you to look at the options for majors, minors, and certificates in the business school. Also, consider opportunities for internships and co-op programs. Look at four and 6-year graduation rates, average starting salaries for their business graduates, and the companies that hire them. Also, for those who go straight to grad schools - where do they end up? All of this information is typically available on their website. If not, ask for it.

Also, consider fit. It can be a great program, but if the student is not happy there, they will not be as successful. And no one wants that phone call from an unhappy kid.

Rankings are one metric, but IMO not a complete reflection of all factors.

Others may disagree but I would look at placement of the business school and school fit (location, size, vibe, weather, cost etc
whatever is important to your daughter) rather than some sort of overall school rank. I would guess all of the schools you mention place well and an MBA should not be needed if your D does well in undergrad.

Not all majors are created equal at any given school. Different schools will have different strengths.

and congrats on the UF and honors admission!

Sorry. That really sucks. But the pathway is not a bad option! You save money and get to graduate as a gator!

Thank you very much for your very thorough and thoughtful response. Would you suggest going straight to each college’s website for average starting salaries for business grads and the companies that hire them, or do you have any suggested links or sites where it can all be found in one place? Thank you again.

Thank you. Agree 100 percent on overall fit. Visits too were very important and telling.
