University of Kansas looking for insights

Our S26 now has Kansas on his radar as a safety. The main reasons are automatic acceptance and a decent amount of automatic merit that brings the COA well within budget. It has a fairly well-regarded business program, big-time sports, and the classic “ college town” environment. Also, several non-stop flights from our local airport, which makes it convenient to fly to and from.

He doesn’t want to look at any of the Southern Schools, which have become super popular for kids in our NYC suburbs. I am hoping to find someone with specific experience with Kansas who can answer some specific questions we have about the school. Thanks

No specific experience as you requested, but I do know lots of kids from the Chicago area who love KU !

Also no personal experience, but some good friends of ours have a kid at KU. Their other kid is at Madison. Both are majoring in some type of Business. Both were very strong high school students. The older (the one at Madison) chose it over a variety of East coast schools (Northeastern and BU and some others) after deciding the vibe at Madison was a better fit. The younger decided to seek a similar experience, so applied only in the Midwest. Midwest flagships tend to be strong. Both kids are liberal, but not very politically active other than voting. Both are having terrific experiences and loving college. They are getting good summer internships (in the Midwest.) I have another friend whose S26 is also applying to KU. Also on his list are University of Oregon and University of Denver. This kid is also liberal, but again not overly political.

Thanks- that fits the bill for our Son, liberal but not that political. The specific info we are looking for is the level of support KU would give to a student who needs extra help. Because of this, we have been looking at some smaller schools for him. We do know that there are some larger schools that have excellent reputations for support services, and that Universities in general have come a long way in providing support. We are hoping to find someone with specific experience with KU whom we can ask about this.

Kansas State may be of interest to your son as well as KU. Very beautiful campus and, from what I saw, very attractive students.

Interesting Wikipedia entry regarding KSU: First among public universities since 1986 in Rhodes, Udall, Marshall, Truman, & Goldwater scholars.

I will start by saying we are a K-State family (from TX) and love everything about it with after almost 8 years there (son undergrad, vet school and now son doing a residency, his wife and her sisters also went there and are all doing great in their careers all over the country). BUT we also feel KU is a very strong school. I love the feel of both schools. I think the support at K-State is better than at KU but I don’t have experience with KU other than everyone I know that went there loved it!

Thanks- We didn’t consider K State because of the distance. KU is a 45 minute drive from KC international and K State two hours. It sounds like a great school.

Very attractive students? Sorry, how is this relevant?

KU is a ways from the KC airport…near an hour. Not sure if there’s regular shuttle service. Nebraska and Oklahoma would be two similar area schools where you can fly ‘closer’ with low cost after merit.

If he qualifies, the Honors program at KU is well reputed.

It’s a good solid state school like any other -in a great town. It is not geographically diverse vs the southern schools, if that will be a concern.

Good luck

We found both drives quite easy and sometimes got good deals flying into Manhattan itself. I thought it might be an issue at first but turns out we only flew a handful of times. My son preferred to make the long drive and we found we did too. Totally get how some people aren’t as comfortable with driving as we are. He owns a house there now and we drive up to see him.
