FYI, I would just like to ask those who thought the students were out of control to look up you tube UMD riot…click on the 9:08 link. It is against TOS to attach youtube. Pay attention at the 8 minute marker when @ 5 police officers beat the crap out of a student and walked away…they didn’t arrest him, they just left him on the ground.

FYI the PG police were also the police that raided a Mayor’s home and killed their pets in front of the family.

Regarding Duke never acting that horrific…YEP you are correct, but let’s pose this a little different…do you believe it was of “Duke” quality for students to hire 2 strippers for an end of the season party? Be very careful where and when you throw stones! They were given a pass for being kids, same is true for UMD.

Watch the long clips, 9 minutes plus, and you will get a total different view of what was going on…these kids were singing Oh MD, they were screaming ACC Champs, DUKE LOST, etc., etc. etc. It is obvious they were getting out of the way for the police, and when the police attacked they were 6 of them compared to 1 student. They were not by themselves, the student was.

JBLA interviewed a HONORS, Dean’s list student who had boot print bruises on his face because the police attacked him for just asking which way do I go?

Yorky, what we have here is a failure to communicate.

I’ve heard some pretty nasty things about New Haven but allowed my D to apply to Yale. Am I an irresponsible parent missing a few nuggets? I don’t think so. Both of my kids are pretty sensible people, both have travelled extensively here and abroad, both assess danger realistically (which is more than I can say for some parents here) and both feel UMCP is a good choice for them. I trust them. I really do.

Do I worry about them? I worry about them all the time! They are my greatest treasures.

It is unfortunate that people were arrested and that police in riot gear had to be used. I was on Franklin Street in Chapel Hill after UNC won the national championship last year, and while the celebration was ridiculously wild, cops were cool and there were only two arrests, despite tens of thousands of people being present. Someone-either UM students or the police in the area-likely overreacted; right now I’m leaning towards saying the police were a bit too heavy-handed.

I recall yrs ago that UNCCH was known for a certain street having an annual block party, it got so out of control that UNCCH had to stop it from occurring anymore.

Every school has these issues every now and then, no school or student body is perfect.

Bullet and I were talking about this last night. I asked him did you ever riot when you were there. He said No, but when UMD football won their ACC championship, they did tear down the field goal and carried it down to Rte 1.

I also agree, UMD administration knew this was going to b a big game, and that is why the police were already on standby. UMD should have had the foresight to set up an after game party on their Mall, if they had done this I wonder how many kids would have been on Rte 1?

It was Apple Festival or something like that, and it was shut down because gangs (not students) started using it as a venue where they could shoot at each other. Very strange, though.

But, I agree that no school or student body is perfect. Like I said, I think the police were the ones that overreacted after the Maryland/Duke game, and I’m a pretty ardent defender of all things police.

UMCP is a good school; there is no doubt of that and it has come a long way from the essentially open admissions school it was in the 70’s.

UMCP may consider UNC its academic rival; I can assure you UNC-CH does not. Then again, the schools are so different. UMCP has a very good engineering program, something that UNC does not.

UMCP should be a University of Michigan given that it is located next to DC. But it is not. This is the result of the Maryland legislature beginning in the 60’s year after year pouring millions into the corrupt welfare state known as Baltimore City (as opposed to funding a world class university), and the aforementioned unfortunate location in PG County.

Being fair, however, Maryland has come a long way. Certain students should clean up their act there, though when it comes to sports events. It gives them a bad name. Peer pressure works, and it would be helpful.

I don’t think anyone really familiar with UMDCP would place UNCCH as an academic equivalent. Let’s be real, UNCCH is in the top 5 in the country for public universities. I think most UMDCP students would say NYU, and PSU are more their equivalent.

UMBC is not a part of UMDCP. which many people think that it is. UMDCP is not like UNC, SUNY or PSU where you can do one application and they accept you to a certain campus. You must apply for both. Baltimore and College Park are their own entities.

UMCP is known for their engineering program, just as NCST is known in NC. They are also known for their Criminal Justice and Political degrees, mainly due to the fact they are so close to DC, and have great internships available.

Yes, certain students should clean up their act, but if you really watch the you tube videos that are 9 minutes, you will walk away with a different perspective and realize that they were having fun. There were reports of kids trying to overturn cars, which made me laugh, because in either of those 9 minute videos (shot by different people) you can see cars honking and speeding down the street. Alot of this was overblown by the media, and buying what PG police was selling, until they saw the you tube videos. Then they were interviewing students showing the bruises they had, and blood stains on RTE 1 from kids being hit by the police. The student at the 8 minute marker has been identified, and he was not arrested, he was left there crawled up in a ball after the police pummeled him. The kids are seen briskly walking away, some even being followed onto sidewalks next to businesses because the police on horseback were aggressive. The most frightening thing to me was the police walking down RTE 1 hitting their shield in unison. It really made me think of a Nazi state.

I also question where the police logic was. They know that Comcast stadium is one side of RTE 1 and some dorms are on the other side, how did they expect them to cross the street? It is easily seen that they were trying to keep the students all on the Comcast side and ASSUMED that kids crossing were trying to cause problems, not trying to get home.
