University of Maryland (UMD) College Park Early Action 2024

Honors and Scholars are both good. But both are a reflection of what a student has accomplished in high school.

A more significant accomplishment is Departmental Honors which all students can apply for at the start of their Junior year.

I have my Directory ID and also set up Multi-Factor Authentication, however when I tried to register the admitted student open house, I keep receiving 5oo error. I tried different browser, kept getting same error.

I’m able to log in, but every time I do it says:

Thank you for your interest in our Admitted Student Open House. There is either no event available, or we have no space available.

When does their financial aid info come out?

@forestmaple from the University of Maryland admissions FB page: "
Financial Aid Notifications - All candidates for merit scholarships will be notified by March 1 and all final awards are made no later than April 1. Need-based financial aid will be offered no later than March 1 for students who submitted their FAFSA by January 1. #NowATerp #UMD2024"

Does anyone know how a student can be admitted to the Biology major once attending if not in the LEP now? I see on the website that I can apply, but no information on when (I see one date for May, but not clear if it can also be done after one semester) and the criteria? Also, if you don’t have the benefit of Biology advising, how can you decide on the best structure for your UMD education in the event you are admitted? Does this limit you as to moving on to a BS/MS program in terms of lengthening your education?

@Ir1852 so long as gateway reqs are met, an internal transfer may be accepted to Biological sciences
Letters and Arts help the student to come up with four semester plan.
The question I have, could a student fail to meet the Gateway requirements if a req. course is graded with a steep curve? Could everyone get a C+ or B or, would some lower percentage of students be designated a C or less grade?
See this resource for internal transfer into STEM majors.

For Honors College, which one is tougher to get in? Gemstone or ILS?

Same for us, in terms of error message for registering for Admitted Students Day

@SRWEQ322 Yes the acceptance letter specifically said Freshman Connection and a major wasn’t listed.

@carrottopcurls2 congrats to your son! My daughter was accepted to the Freshman Connection and also wants to study Engineering (Computers). I too am a Maryland alumni and loved the experience. We are also considering Penn State. What about Maryland blew him away vs. Penn State?

Did everyone’s acceptance letter start off with the following?

ā€œCongratulations, you’re #NowATerp! I’m thrilled to offer you admission to the University of Maryland (UMD) and for the Fall 2020 semester.ā€

The ā€œandā€ seems out of place…

After ā€œandā€ is ā€œCollege Park Scholarsā€ on the letter we received.

Do only Honors and Scholars get merit scholarships?

@CollegeMotherNow - No. Only Honors college students are eligible for the B/K Scholarships, but all other students who applied by the EA are eligible for Presidents Scholarships, and all the In-State students are eligible for Dean’s scholarships. There are also some scholarships awarded by individual departments.

what’s the average stats for a president’s scholarship recipient

There are no official stats reported by UMD. You could look through previous years threads,

I was accepted into the school and my admitted major is listed as Journalism: Undecided* (06010). I was wondering if anyone knows exactly what this means? Thanks!

@user_469028 my D has the Presidential Scholarship $12,500/yr. Admitted to Engineering class of 2023. Her stats:
OOS
GPA UW 3.969; W 4.969
SAT (Superscored) 1490
AP with Distinction

You must maintain a 3.2 GPA to keep your scholarship. (please read that multiple times. My daughter got a 57 on her first Chem exam). Class average was a 47. Some poor soul got a 7. They had a graph.

Let me take a moment to make a PSA. If anyone here has the AP credit to skip Calc 2 and go directly to Calc 3…please do so. At the very least do some googling/reddit. Thanks!

I’m confused. If honors and scholars are seen as the same, why is it that only honors students are eligible for the Banneker Key scholarship, while scholars students can only get presidential scholarships at best. Presidential scholarships only go up to $12,500 per year, however Banneker Key can be either a half or full ride. A full ride for an out of state student being valued at around $50,000 per year. I feel like they would most likely offer the extra $37,500 per year to the best students. I’m not an expert, but I just can’t get around this discrepancy.
