Benefits of Applying Early Action
We strongly encourage you to apply early action to receive priority consideration for admission, merit-based scholarships and invitations to special programs. UMD’s November 1 early action deadline is non-binding and students who submit a completed application by this date will receive an admission decision by February 1. By applying for admission to the fall semester, you will also be automatically considered for admission to the spring semester.
In addition to applying early, it is important to send transcripts for any courses, taken at outside sources (community college, private institutions or entities, etc.) that do not appear on your high school transcript. UMD will not notify you that it considers these things to be missing. You just will not get a decision. You may consider some of these things to simply be activities that enhance your application, but if there was some kind of grade given, UMD wants to see a transcript. Every year there are a few students who get tripped up by this.
Parents - CC is a fantastic resource for information. Another great resource is the UMD Prospective parent group on FB. We have thousands of experienced parents and some terrific staff who can help you navigate the process from application to acceptance. UMD is very strict about receiving the official transcripts and other supporting documents by the EA deadline. If in doubt, do check with the admission office if they received everything and the people working in admissions as per my experience are super nice.
Was looking at the UMD review factors here and this one caught my eye “Learning Differences”
Despite significant challenges from ADHD/executive function/fine motor delay, my 2026 grad has a good GPA (handful of Bs). Some of the Bs were definitely due to organizational issues during early grades. Recommendations may be less that stellar also has a result.
He was not going to mention anything about ADHD on his application but now wondering if he should? Not sure if counselor will be saying anything. Thoughts from anyone who has been there/done that? School has lots of grade inflation so a handful of Bs are significant. Will be submitting single ACT sitting score of 34 and strong spring semester junior year grades.
I’ve been on this forum a long time and I don’t recall this particular question being asked before. My personal opinion is that it be best for the counselor to address this subject (if at all), but there should be a discussion with the counselor before any final decision is made. A single sitting ACT score of 34 is Very Good! Just make sure that your son gets his complete application in BEFORE the EA date.
