Real excited to get out of the north and go to Miami this fall. Sko canes.
@duskraptor Me neither. I called the admissions and they told me that all scholarship letters have been sent, so weāre probably not going to receive any scholarships. They said that financial aid letter should be sent in āfollowing couple weeks,ā so I guess we should wait a bit more⦠a lot more.
Late in responding, but deferred from EA. Kinda confused because according to our schoolās naviance, it looked like noone with my stats hasnāt gotten in. Must be getting more and more competitive. HS counselor actually recommended the U because he anticipated substantial merit lol!
ACT: 33
GPA: 4.4
8 APs
Excellent extracurriculars, job experience, volunteer
Essay probably could have been better
No hard feelings, just kinda bummed itās not an option to consider
Does anyone know what the below means? Daughter opened up her application status and she has had no messages telling her she is denied or accepted or deferred justā¦
application is complete
Accepted EA (with 20k a year)!:
UW: 4.0
W: 4.3
SAT: 1460 (didnāt send, 730 R 730 M)
ACT: 33
APs: AP Lang (4), AP Physics 1 (3)
Ethnicity: Latina (Puerto Rican)
Major: Neuroscience
ECs: Academic Decathlon Starter, Founder of Spanish Club, MFOL Chapter, Started my own volunteer organization, Academic Superbowl Starter and Captain, attended Duke University for 2 summers
Essay: Pretty strong! It was super personal and about my separation from my culture after moving from a Puerto Rican neighborhood to a small farm town (and my subsequent re-embrace of my culture)
Current Courseload: AP Calc AB, Spanish 3 honors, US History, Medical Interventions (this is like a medical-oriented lab class at my school), AP Chem, English W131 (a composition class taken through my state university), AP Bio, and AP Seminar
Extra Info: Iām graduating after my junior year because I ran out of classes to take at my school (and canāt be considered a senior simply by enrolling in CC classes, I need to have a full schedule at my HS per my schoolās policy)
@doglover2001 totally agree
Something smells so fishy about this whole process.
Son 3.7 UW, 34 ACT the works with APās extreme demonstrated interest, boatloads of ECās, and was deferred as well.
Got into Tulane EA with a 30,000 a year scholarship. The way he looks at it, itās UMās loss. He is now going to attend Tulane. Sad thing is he wanted UM more, and now they lost him due to āthe game.ā
I guarantee RD with his numbers and resume he wouldāve gotten inā¦that being said UM lost him. The majority of people they accepted EA will not attend. Those are IVY LEAGUE numbers. The system is shady.
@bayeriffic Too funny - also accepted into Tulane with substantial merit. Your example is even more drastic and just shows that this is a crapshoot especially for these somewhat smaller schools that are gaining in popularity. I read through dozens of examples of kids that got in to UM with much lower stats and got 23K. I totally get itās a holistic exercise, but in both our examples, these are not remotely lacking in any way. Iām a true believer in fate though and it all happens for a reason.
@doglover2001 itās honestly crazy-
We visited UM 3 times. Actually delayed our trip in Florida over Christmas break to see the admissions counselor. Every kid on naviance from last year and years before got in with his stats. He made it beyond clear he would go if accepted. We arenāt dealing with a low stat or borderline kid. Itās bizarre and he fit into their program like a glove. Anyway, done complaining. Moving on. Heās thrilled with Tulane and at the end of the day is very excited. Best of luck to you and everyone.
Iāve rejected my offer of admission this morning. Iām so heartbroken and itās so unfortunate that I wasnāt given any merit aid, but I guess itās just not meant to be.
Iāve had an incredible journey with all of the frequent flyers in this thread and I canāt wait to hear where everyone ends up!
@bayeriffic the so-called system has become increasingly competitive. I would be cautious at labeling any stats as Ivy stats. However I commend your son on Tulane, it is indeed U of Ms loss.
Daughter was accepted EA but I agree with a lot you on here. The acceptance baffled me. I know the application is looked at as a whole but some of these bright students rejected with great resumes and other students denied merit is crazy. If the stats are correctly listed by the people on this forum, yeah dumbfounded at the least. I have an opinion but will not explore that on here. Either way things in life happen for a reason. Good luck to all the students wherever they may go to! Sometimes the dream school is just a dream and not a reality. Understand that and then make your school your dream school! In the end we are all humans trying to suceed and make a better life. Again good luck! And last my daughter will not be attending the U. Life goes on!
@nalani2 I apologize for what i wrote-I didnāt mean to say my sonās stats were Ivy Leagueā¦I re-read and it sounds like I implied that. He definitely does not have that kind of resume as he didnāt apply to any of those schools:)
I meant to say a lot of kids deferred had Ivy-like stats. Sorry for confusion. Thank you for the comments on Tulane. He is very excited.
I was accepted ED2 which means I am bound to attend UM. However, I have not received any merit scholarship either and upon emailing the admissions office, they responded by saying that financial aid funds for International students are very limited and not guaranteedand my file is currently being reviewed. My expected family contribution is $16000 but I assume that the financial aid package alone will not be sufficient to cover my financial need which sums up to about $48000. Can I break my ED agreement in case the UM proves to be too expensive for me because I have received offers from other colleges with a good scholarship and fa package?
@Bayeriffic@doglover2001 I have a sophomore at UM, and Iām shocked you were both deferred with your stats. My D was recently accepted with $20K (4.3 gpa, 33 ACT, 12 APs, many awards, good-not great essay) but her friend we talked into applying with similar stats (African American) was deferred. I was floored. I thought the friend would have received a ton of scholarship for diversity alone. Another friend was accepted to UVA (my Dās first choice/was deferred) but deferred at UM. I donāt understand what is going on at that admissions office other than itās become crazy competitive in the last two years since my S was accepted. We attended an accepted student event last weekend where they said 40K applied for 2100 spots, average acceptance was a 4.0/32ACT. The Business School info session said it was 62/38 boys/girls, and they would kill for girls. My D is a finance major, so we think thatās how she got in with merit money - plus, her brother is a current student. Her friends both applied pre-health (dentist/med) which are the most competitive fields at UM. We are from Arkansas. Most of their students are from FL & the NE, so that may be a factor too.
FWIW, my D was deferred at Tulane (as were both of her friends), so that is an accomplishment for you both.
@tmeg01 I was deferred EA to UM this past month, which was a shocker for me. My stats:
SAT 1560 (780M, 780CR)
ACT 35 SS (34 w/o SS)
11 AP classes (grades in for 5 APs: 5-Physics-1, 5-Spanish, 5-US History, 4-World History, 4-English)
Sent one SAT Subject Test (US History-800)
GPA: 3.7 unweighted, 4.26 weighted
ECs werenāt bad. 4-years on varsity tennis and team won State. Volunteered at Stem Cell branch of major cancer hospital in US.
BTW, Iāve only been accepted to one State school, where by State Law, I had to be admitted due to my SAT &/or ACT scores and Class Rank. Iāve been super depressed. My parents just hired a private college counselor to see what can be done where Iāve been deferred or still have outstanding applications, and the counselor explained to me my biggest problem: "You are a white male from a Red State, and white males from Red States are super unpopular with AOs.
