University of Michigan Ann Arbor Class of 2022 Early Action

Deferred: ACT 34, 15 AP’s, GPA:>4.6 , Potential Valedictorian, multiple leadership postions and volunteer activities. This is the second college my son got deferred today from early action. I believe he has a very strong application. Can someone share what goes in the college admission, process why such strong applications get deferred.

Here are my stats:
ACCEPTED LSA
OOS white female
4.07 GPA weighted
32 ACT
Did not take subject tests
Pretty good extracurriculars
Good recs and essays

So…anyone want to shed light onto why I no longer have a link to see my application data nor a link to view my credentials? In fact, it says my application is no longer active. On top of that, there seems to be something new with my WA: they added summer application? What does this mean?

Don’t know why this happened but I got the email saying I was deferred but my application never said anything does anyone know why this happened and is there a reason for two different defferal letters?

I just got deferred and can someone help me when and to whom should I send my LOCI?

Theory on the two deferral letters:
Michigan took the top 50% or so of applicants based solely on unweighted gpa and act and reviewed their applications because they knew that everyone in that pool would be good enough for either admission or deferral. Those in the bottom 50% of the applicant pool, the ones notified over email, haven’t had their applications read yet because so many people applied. The applicants who were notified on the portal’s letter says “deferred for further review”. The second notification letter says “we need this additional information and time to ensure that we give your application the best possible review.” The difference in wording here leads me to believe they haven’t reviewed the second group’s applications. Further, because the top 50% have strong enough initial stats, they aren’t required to send in midyear grades. Michigan needs more ‘information’ from the bottom 50% before they’re considered, which is why the second notification requires 1st semester grades to be sent in. This would also explain why no one got denied (applicants that may have gotten denied would likely be in the unreviewed/2nd notification/bottom 50% group).

Disclaimers: top/bottom 50% was just a number I threw out, it could be anything. Also, I was one of the people that got deferred through the portal so my analysis might be a lil bit biased/hopeful. Either way, this is just a theory so don’t be disheartened. Best of luck to all.

I was deferred and I received both letters.
I received one in the portal that stated “deferred for further review” and I also received an email deferral stating “we need this additional information and time to ensure that we give your application the best possible review”.
So I don’t think that theory holds

Portal’s been up a while but just got the email. Does anyone’s Honors College link work yet?

Accepted!! 33 ACT & 3.98 GPA

Accepted.
Asian-male-OOS-LSA
IBDP 43/45 4HL 3SL (50/52)
ACT35
SAT SUBJECT 800/800 (MATH/PHYSICS)
Leadership Ecas (specific area only)
8/10 Essay ?
No legacy

Deferred from a Ivie.
Not high enough stats? Maybe.
Some formula is there, just don’t know what works.

ACCEPTED!!!

took both tests (submitted both):
SAT 1450
ACT 24 (science really brought me down, I got an 18 lmao)
GPA 3.2 unweighted, 4.2 weighted (really loaded my schedule with APs, junior year sucked! Ended with hella 89s rofl)

Really small private school in Pennsylvania, I think my essays were pretty good. My letters of rec were probably okay, I had a really good relationship with my AP chem teacher so I am guessing she really talked me up to the admissions office
ECs: I was very involved at my high school. President of numerous clubs: scrapbooking, curling, asian cultures, conspiracy theories. Captain of the JV swimming team, treasurer of senior-high at my Latter-Day Saints church, not much school spirit tho never went to a f-ball game haha but excited about what UM has to offer in that category

So humbled and honored to have this opportunity, can’t believe I got in! Go Blue!

Deferred OOS (CA)
Asian female
Applied to engineering physics

GPA 4.42
SAT 1550 SAT II Math 2 800, Chem 800, Physics 800
ACT 34
Took 8 APs and got five on all of them (Physics C, Physics 1,2, Econ, Calc, Chem)
National Scholar Commended
ECs: varsity tennis and varsity basketball, mock trial, robotics, math league
Had a research internship with a professor last summer and got her to write a rec

Probably the essays weren’t great enough, but I’m still a little disappointed not getting in, especially since I think my stats are good enough. I was in another country during ninth and tenth grade, so I really didn’t have any opportunities to gain leadership positions in any of my ECs. Honestly Michigan isn’t my first option, but being deferred really worries me because my other schools are a lot harder to get in. (Really want to go to Cal…) Could it really be that Michigan puts a lot more preference to in-state students? (I think I didn’t exemplify my interest toward Michigan a lot in my essays…)

Got the acceptance email at 1:09 am!!!

ACCEPTED LSA (Waiting on Ross)!! OOS ACT 32, V strong grades and amazing essays in my opinion! Really told a nice story! GO BLUEEEE <3

I was pretty surprised to receive my admission, but now I’m thrilled to start exploring my options. Good luck to the rest of you, and congrats to everyone else who got in, and if you didn’t, don’t take it personally, UMich gets thousands upon thousands of Early Apps, so if they miss a true gem like you, that’s their loss. Go Blue!!! ((:

@imtotesbonkers99 you made my day  thanks so much
