With due respect, why should there be any legacy weight whatsoever?
As legacies, they are already in a better spot in terms of preparation, motivation, inside scoop and what not… what’s the fault of a non legacy applicant who’s dream is to also study at UMich?

UMich has a very high yield, even then not a good excuse.
As for donors, not every legacy donates; but if they do donate 500M, sure…
Also, with UMich tuition, every OOS admit “donates.”

For what it’s worth, I truly wish everyone the best of luck. My daughter was in this position a year ago…and was deferred…and then waitlisted. She was heartbroken. Her oldest sister had graduated from Michigan 2 years prior but that didn’t seem to matter. We are out of state and both of them applied to the Nursing School. Like many here, they excelled both academically and athletically. My daughter was then literally one of the lucky ones and was accepted on May 20th last Spring after a torturous wait. She is now THRIVING at Michigan with great friends and crushed her classes first semester. She’s thrilled with the sorority she just joined and is enjoying every aspect of Michigan she’s always wanted to but thought she would never have the chance at a year ago. Point being, obviously not everyone gets in - and I believe many that don’t are absolutely equally deserving of those that do but don’t let the process derail you or your child. It can be brutal and seemingly unfair - hang tough and good luck. Go Blue:blue_heart:

Please read again. At no point did I say there should be legacy weight. I merely said that I hope there is because selfishly I want her to be admitted and find out sooner rather than later. As others have pointed out, legacies generally do provide both increased donations and yield protection and reality is both of those matter. Nevertheless, UM does not give legacy weight.

Everyone has a “hook” of some sort. Legacy, donor, athlete, first generation, low socioeconomic group, strong volunteer activities, letter of rec from powerful person, etc etc etc. Many categories in my mind should have no weight but they do — it’s just the game of admissions we are forced to play.

There a difference between hooks that level the playing field vs those that do it the other way. Anyhow, it’s a touchy topic, so I’ll stop it here.
