University of Michigan Ann Arbor Early Action Fall 2025

I agree with both of you. Lol. But it’s a path.

All kinds of paths, and mostly doesn’t matter where you start, but how you use what you’ve got, AND luck-of-the-draw along the way.

lol, the college process and “fair” are words that will never ever be used together. Anyone who claims otherwise hasn’t been paying attention. Most AO blogs will say that very plainly, they understand the process isn’t fair, but urge you to have a good list of schools you would attend and encourage your student to put their energy into those that accepted them.

Thanks for that…

Its actually not a Michigan law to admit a certain percentage of in state (unlike, for instance, NC, where the state legislature sets it at 82% in state for all public state schools)

In general U-M aims to be about 50/50 (I remember a couple years ago reading it was the first time the incoming class had a higher % of out of state)

According to the Michigan Almanac, in 2013, 60% of the entire undergraduate population was in-state and 33% from OOS.

And as of the Fall of 2023, 51% of the entire undergraduate population was in-state and 41% from OOS.

The last available CDS states that the OOS freshman % as 44%, so maybe 2023-2024?

The population of International students has risen from 7 to 8% in the same time frame (2013-2023).

I think that’s including graduate and professional students. Here’s the data, page 2 show in-state vs OOS. (International must be in OOS)

I have a question about the Expression of Continued Interest (ECI). What is a better approach? In essay form or bullet point form? For the two other deferrals, my D25 wrote an essay for each. But U Mich’s ECI has a limit of 250 words.

Technically you are correct. I should have been clearer. There isn’t a specific Michigan state law that mandates a limit on the number of OOS students a university in Michigan can admit. However, public universities in Michigan often have policies in place to prioritize in-state students due to funding. What does that mean? Michigan Legislature put in place a prevision as such there is an incentive from Michigan universities to have a sizable in-state students. I heard that on the radio when a legislature talked about MCL-390… don’t have the full number, that’s what I remember.

Whatever way you can get your message across. I have only seen students use essay formats

Michigan runs more like a private school than a public school. Been that way for a long time.

It’s optional. Do you think it really matters if it is submitted?

Good question. My D25 also thought it would make no difference. But until last night when she was awarded a recognition at her HS for the sport she does, I told her there is no harm in updating U-M. The worst is that they won’t accept her but why not submit this milestone anyways.

imo, with Michigan’s “optional”, think: nudge, nudge, wink, wink, know what I mean?…

So again the questions about sending in the ECI. We don’t know if they just put it in your file and don’t look or if they do.

Some students never send in one and are accepted.

But many students have emailed their Aos for different reasons. Some send form emails and some send personalized emails. But they should all say “Go Blue”… Lol.

So what if “your” AOs actually looks at the letter vs not?

I called a school years ago to ask this same type of question about something optional and she said “it’s only optional if you make it optional”. I thought that was telling.

With regard to the ECI:

I have two kids currently at Michigan: D21 and D24 were both deferred in early action and later admitted in RD. Michigan was the first choice for both of them and they submitted the ECI mostly to feel that they did absolutely everything they possibly could to get in. I have no idea if it was a factor at all, but it worked out in the end for them.

I don’t think it hurts to submit the ECI. Doing so might not lead to admission, but at least you and your student will know they gave it their all.

So #20 Michigan lost to #7 Purdue like two weeks ago by 27 points.

Today was the revenge game and they should be #1 in the Big Ten until MSU wins tonight. Lol.

This is what basketball looks like now at Michigan.
