University of Michigan Ann Arbor Early Action Fall 2025

First off congratulations!!

GT is awesome but totally different feel.

Just two to add. Go to the Arb. and go to Pizza Bob’s for chipati and hot fudge chocolate chip shakes or any of 50 you can ask them to make. Lol.

Everyone has their favorite place to go to. Tons of good restaurants and diners. Kids won’t starve that is for sure.

Thanks @Knowsstuff & @DroidsLookingFor the food/must-see sights reccos and your wishes! We have booked a night stay at the Graduate. Really want D25 have an awesome time during our visit. Separately I have been spending a lot of time on the ECE/ CoE websites to understand all the cool stuff that the curriculum offers. I know that UMich is big on Leadership along with rigorous course work/ Research opportunities etc. Vs GaTech (Her other Admit), U Mich offers a nice balance between personality development and Academic rigor which D25 would like.

We will also do a Dept Tour which will hopefully help her to differentiate between the program offered by GaTech. If there is anything else that characterizes the UMich Grad experience would love to know.

Oh right completely forgot the Graduate! Another great choice that’s right there.

Glad you’re doing the department tour. My DS definitely enjoyed that and it did make a difference for him when he was choosing in the end.

If you PM me and really want me to convince you I can tell you about my sons experience at Michigan in engineering and all his CS friend’s as well. California is the largest contingent outside of kids from Michigan @sushiritto can tell you about your student’s experience from the warm beaches in California… Lol

The Graduate is top notch in A2 and centrally located. Here are a few older threads to peruse.

Thank you very much for these links @sushiritto! @Knowsstuff will definitely reach out, more so after completing all campus visits, where in I’ll be in a better position to contrast and compare the different campuses
. Amazing kudos to you both for your continued supervision of this forum and responsiveness to such queries!!

Ya, I don’t know what to tell you about Michigan and the City of A2 that wouldn’t sound like a “homer,” but my kid had an awesome time there, but for the time spent doing classes from home because of Covid.

DD was in LSA, so I know zippo abut CoE and North Campus, but Central Campus is essentially one large block (the Quad) with all of her classes being essentially just about moving across the Quad from one building to another.

The highlight of her time there was being able to mill around the field after Michigan beat OSU 42-27 in 2021 for the first of the current 4 in a row. She loves sports and while you don’t have to enjoy sports to have fun there, if one happens to love sports, it’s like the “Mecca” of college sports.

Depending on when you’re there in March, assuming it’s March, and also how well the Michigan hockey and basketball teams are doing (typically very well), attend a game or games. If they’re playing away from campus, not at home, get to the Brown Jug, “Skeeps” (Scorekeepers), Pretzel Bell, etc. to watch with all the other Michigan fans.

Hi All. I recently watched a speaker talking about how to help college freshman protect their mental health. It’s a crisis and there are ways to be proactive. He wrote a workbook called Thrive Year One by James Geisler - it has a series of exercises to work through. We have our child starting the workbook now. While many of us remember college as our best 4 years, what we forget is that there were times of incredible stress. Passing along because I would love to see this mental health crisis decline.

Great suggestion. You hit on two topics that are worthy of discussion.

My wife was telling our kid’s when applying that “college will be the best 4 year’s of your life”. I had her stop and we talked about it. It might of been true for her but it might not be for them. That’s a lot of pressure to live up to. There are hundreds of threads on here from student’s that will tell you for whatever reason that… College is not the best four year’s of their life, for them.

We also told our kid’s that while paying for college there are lots of free stuff. Tickets to games, music, art activities. Join clubs and get free swag and food (did you student’s read this sentence closely… Lol).

But also health services like mental health. We told them they can go on their own if they don’t want us to know but to go if things just get to hard or your just not sure. Call and let us know if you want to. We wanted them to know it’s OK and a normal part of life. Case example is a friend’s son at Michigan. The above was happening and depression was setting in but he never experienced this before and didn’t understand it. He went to the hospital and admitted himself. Called his dad once there who flew in the next day. He stayed in the hospital I think a week. Got medicated. Graduated as a top student.

Michigan has wonderful resources and an amazing medical complex. One of the top medical systems in the world. We told our kids to use it when they see fit.

Thanks for bringing up this topic.

For some reason I can’t find this info and wondering if anyone can let me know if a student can minor in another college while at lsa. For example major in anthropology in lsa and minor in engineering or business. Thank you

Lsa can minor as suggested. My son had engineering with entrepreneurship minor from Ross and Sustainability minor. You get 3 advisors in this example and paperwork to fill out? You need to talk to admissions about the possibilities and not sure if you have to do a cross campus transfer for engineering. But they will let you know.

This might be if your switching majors not adding one. Don’t think there are engineering minors but check.

My son did this. He wanted to be an Actuary. Met with both heads of this department and engineering in Junior year. Then once the app was submitted really wanted Engineering. He could pull out of EA and reapply during RD they told him. He got accepted EA and was accepted Feb 1 for cross campus transfer. He just had to meet all the requirements which wasn’t bad. Don’t think you can do this for CS anymore

U Michigan uses Uwill, a mental health platform that offers students immediate access to licensed counselors for therapy. The platform also includes crisis support and wellness programming - all for free.

The school also has exceptional in-person support.

Yes. Lots of Poli Sci majors (LSA) who minor in Public Policy (Ford), or Ross Business students who minor in a foreign language (LSA), etc.

“Students in the College may elect one or more minors offered by departments and programs within the College or by other academic units on campus.”

Hi I remember you from last year as the expert about U-M. My child was WL’d for Fall 2024 and didn’t get off WL. Applied as a transfer for Fall 2025 and was admitted Friday. Child isn’t sure if starting over somewhere new is wise. I’m wondering if your knowledge of all things U-M extends to knowing of people who transferred there and if they found the experience manageable? Thank you.

I really don’t. Just from people who have transfered from here. My daughter tranferred from one Lac to another Junior year after taking a gap year. She didn’t have any problems fitting in or making new friend’s. Congrats on your son. Academically, Michigan is a tough school but if he got accepted then they think he will do well.

Congratulations! There are many differences between the two schools and locations. Of course, the weather may play a role in deciding, but I would try avoiding that angle and decide on the education and student life.

For more info about Ann Arbor, there is PBS travel show, go to YouTube and search for Under the Radar Michigan Ann Arbor and you’ll get two episodes that will give you some insight.

Thanks very much. Child is at a very demanding SLAC and did very well, and feels confident about the academic part of U-M. It’s the social part that’s the concern. We shall see!

Have him start facebooking /Instagram people there in his major of interest or just clubs he might join. Great way to see if his peeps are on campus.

So my son did Co-op housing senior Covid year when it was letting up a bit, kinda. It’s a great way to meet people. It’s more dorm like but in houses. His came with a chef!.. He barely spent money on food since left overs were always avaliable. Breakfast cereal where included. His came with free bikes to ride, hammock and BBQ pit. Game rooms etc etc. Internet /utilities included. There are like 12 or so of these on campus and they tend to “sell” out quickly. Quick way to meet people. Some of the larger one it’s easy to get single rooms etc. They tend to eat dinner together but don’t have to. Many have activities weekly also.

What is the concern with the social part? Not enough or too much?
